Local man envisions new playground

If a Charlton Heights man has his wish, local children will be cavorting on a new playground by the end of the year.

Dr. Erkan Esmer, who owns Esmer & Associates, a Boomer engineering firm, aims to construct a “first-class playground” on an approximately one-acre tract of land he owns adjacent to Gladiola Lane in Falls View. Then, he wants to donate the playground to a governmental agency, such as the Fayette County Commission, for use by county children.

“We don’t have anything here,” Esmer said last week. “I never see them (playgrounds in the area) used.

“I’ve been thinking about this for a couple of years. I want to get it done and get it deeded to the county. Then, they can put somebody in charge and maybe ask for volunteers (to help run it).”

If Esmer proceeds with his plans, he will have to clear the land, which is currently overgrown. Then, he would pay for playground equipment to be placed on the site. Steps from the property can also lead down to the Kanawha River for fishing, he added.

Some of the trees currently standing could be retained to provide good shade, he said.

Anyone interested in participating in the project, such as helping oversee volunteers or possibly assist in planning and construction, can call Steve at 304-469-3373.
