SMITHERS — The City of Smithers has elections in its future.
This Saturday, March 6, city voters will determine the outcome of a three-year excess levy election, and voters will go to the polls in June to choose who will govern them for the next four years.
According to recorder Susan Skaggs, the passage of this Saturday’s levy would provide for almost $100,000 in the three-year cycle to aid with providing police protection and keeping the waste management system up to date. Specifically, Skaggs says, the aim is to keep providing an around-the-clock police presence, as well as pay for the new packer for the sewer system.
City officials stress that the levy will not raise property taxes.
Voters can cast their ballots at city hall from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Filing for office also began Monday and runs through March 15 for the municipal election, which is set for June 8.
According to Skaggs, no one had filed as of Tuesday morning.
Filing fees are $100 for both mayor and recorder and $30 for council.
Candidates must file in person at city hall, since their application has to be notarized, Skaggs pointed out. They must be Smithers residents, at least 18 years old and eligible to register to vote.
