July 4 activities planned
Upper Kanawha Valley municipalities will again host celebrations marking Independence Day.
On Saturday, July 4, the City of Montgomery — through the Montgomery Park Board — will sponsor its annual Fourth of July celebration for the UKV.
The Montgomery Pool will be open to the public for free from noon to 6 p.m. Free hot dog, soda and chips will be provided.
Activities for children will be held on Third Avenue from 6-9 p.m.
Local band Stonestreet will perform the Fourth of July concert from 7-10 p.m. on Third Avenue.
Then, the evening will be capped off by the fireworks display beginning at 10 p.m. Area residents are urged to bring their lawn chairs and enjoy the celebration.
The Town of Gauley Bridge is also getting in on the fun on that Saturday, as a gospel sing will commence at 1 p.m. at the old Save-A-Lot parking lot. At 7 p.m., the town will provide free watermelon and ice cream. At the same time, local deejay, LuLu Shepherd of the Bump City Connection, will provide a musical backdrop for the activities.
Fireworks will begin at dusk.

Celebrate the Fourth of July early at the beautiful Kanawha River Café.
From 8 p.m. to midnight on Friday, July 3, the Robinson & Jones Band will offer a mixture of country and oldies music.
There will be a $5 cover charge.
The café is located at 125th Street in Chesapeake behind the volunteer fire department and Chesapeake City Old.

Numerous activities are planned for the 2009 New River Gorge Heritage Festival and Fourth of July celebration in Fayetteville. Activities will be available for all age groups to participate in throughout the festival, which runs from June 27 to July 5, capped off by a fantastic fireworks display on the 4th of July. Fayetteville has celebrated the festival since 1951.
This year for the July 3 afternoon events and evening concert at Town Square, community organizations and clubs, churches and local restaurants are invited to set up vendor stands offering an array of food specialties, bringing a taste of Fayetteville to the festival. This is an opportunity for a group to show off its cooking, as well as earn a little money. If your group is interested in participating, please contact Roxanna Ballard at 304-222-1618.

Fireman presumed dead
