Two former elementary schools in Oak Hill are going to the figurative auction block.
The former Oak Hill Elementary and former Oak Hill East End Elementary will be auctioned Thursday morning, according to both Fayette County Schools Superintendent Dwight Dials and a legal advertisement in The Register-Herald.
Both are public auctions that will take place at the respective schools’ front doors, according to the legal advertisement.
The former Oak Hill East End Elementary, located at 103 Ingram St., will be auctioned at 10 a.m. Thursday, according to the legal advertisement. The former Oak Hill Elementary, located at 140 School St., will be auctioned at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Dials said any winning bids will be reviewed. He can recommend accepting or rejecting bids, and state school officials will have the final decision. The state took over Fayette County Schools earlier this year.
Some people may want to tear down the buildings and use the sites for other development, Dials said. However, he would like to see them renovated, upgraded and used for community service.
For example, the buildings could be used as fitness centers for a city that does not have a YMCA, he said.
During his tenure as Raleigh County school superintendent, Mountain State University bought the old Beckley Junior High and expanded its campus.
“I would like to see them used for some purpose where they can continue to serve the needs of our children,” Dials said.
Dials said he would also like to find out what citizens would like the buildings’ future uses to be.
