Vickie Lynn Akers



Vickie Lynn Akers, 51, of Charlton Heights, died Feb. 16, 2008.

Born Aug. 27, 1956, at Gauley Bridge, she was the daughter of Velva Rose Woods of Hugheston and the late William C. Woods.

Mrs. Akers was a homemaker and a member of Gauley Bridge Baptist Church, the National Barrel Horse Association, and The American Quarter Horse Association.

Surviving, in addition to her mother: her husband, Wiley L. Akers; daughters, Lesley Monk and husband, Shawne, of Pinch and Chynna Akers at home; grandchildren, Chloe Monk and Camryn Monk of Pinch; mother-in-law, Donevia Myers Akers of Boomer; sister, Brenda Woods of Vero Beach, Fla.; and brother, Tim Woods and wife, Jeanie, of Summersville.

The funeral service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge, with the Rev. Shane A. Wynn and the Rev. Danny Bowen officiating.

Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. Wednesday until service time at the funeral home chapel.

Nila Goad Bailey



Nila Goad Bailey of Charleston died Feb. 11, 2008, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

Mrs. Bailey was a teacher at Kanawha County schools, first at Washington District, then teaching home economics at Lincoln Junior High School, and finally at Horace Mann Junior High School, where she retired.

Surviving: her husband of 45 years, Encil Bailey; sister, Elizabeth Durham of Liverpool, N.Y.; niece, Kim Cowen of Middletown, Pa.; several other nieces and nephews, as well as several great-nieces and -nephews.

Interment was in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

The family requests that donations be made to Kanawha Valley Senior Services, 2428 Kanawha Blvd. E., Charleston, WV 25311, or to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 900 Washington St. E., Charleston, WV 25301.

Dennis John Ballard, 47, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Hugheston, died Feb. 6, 2008.

Forrest Eugene Blume

Forrest Eugene Blume, 76, a resident of Parsons and a well known retired conservation officer of Tucker County, died Feb. 10, 2008, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following a massive heart attack the day before. He was a native of Lookout and worked at the Barrel Factory at Alloy for 12 years.

Ruby M. Cook



Ruby M. Cook, 79, of Kincaid, died Feb. 9, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born June 2, 1928, at Page, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Laura Wall. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Cook; and sons, Charles L. Cook, James F. Cook, Mark C. Cook, and C.E. Cook.

Ruby resided at the home of her daughter, Brenda K. Cruikshank, and spent the last six years of glorious life in devoted service to the Pentecostal Holiness Faith as a member of the Christian Revival Center in Robson.

Surviving: her children, Nathan P. Cook, Brenda K. Cruikshank, Judith A. Lucas, Betty J. Kelly, Kitty S. Francis, and Tamela C. McClung.

Funeral services were Feb. 12 at High Lawn Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Pastor Dan Smith officiating. She was laid to rest at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Charles Bevil Dawson



Charles Bevil Dawson, 80, of Witcher Road, Belle, died Feb. 8, 2008, after a long battle with cancer.

Ronald Macon Dorsey



Ronald Macon Dorsey died Feb. 13, 2008, at Montgomery General Hospital.

Born on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1924, at Marting, he was the son of the late John McKinley Dorsey and Martha Dorsey Gerald. He also was preceded in death by his stepfather, Dan Gerald; his wife, Mary Rose Dorsey; a daughter, Sherlyn Faye Cameron; and sisters, Cathline Cox and Thela Mae Holmes.

Mr. Dorsey served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Macon worked in the mines and later became a businessman in the Montgomery area. He had been retired for many years.

He wanted to live long enough for his great-granddaughter to know him. He made it. Remington is 4 years old. Her words about PaPa Dorsey are “I love him and I like to hold his hand and give him hugs and kisses.”

Surviving: son-in-law, Bill Cameron; granddaughter, Diana Beam and her husband, Dale; and great-granddaughter, Remington Dalelyn Beam.

Service was Feb. 17 at O'Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with the Rev. Ron Eagle officiating. Burial with military honors presented by Post 8366 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Gauley Bridge, was in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Josephine Mattea Ferrari



Josephine Mattea Ferrari, 92, of Smithers, died Feb. 12, 2008, in Montgomery General Hospital Extended Care Unit.

Born March 1, 1915, in Smithers, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Antonia Regis Mattea. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Ferrari.

Mrs. Ferrari was a member of the Calvary Episcopal Church, Montgomery, and a retired schoolteacher in Fayette County.

Surviving: sister, Mary Wilcox of Millersville, Md.; caregiver and faithful companion, Delores Baker of Smithers; loving nephew, Mike Lowe of Hurricane; and several additional nieces and nephews.

Graveside prayer service was Feb. 15 at Montgomery Memorial Park, London, with Father Stan Holmes officiating.

William Lawrence Jackson



William Lawrence Jackson, 84, the Jackson family patriarch, died Feb. 9, 2008, at Montgomery General Hospital, Montgomery.

Born Oct. 12, 1923, in London, he was the son of the late Carl and Alberta Jackson. He also was preceded in death by his sisters, Ernestine Murray and Dorothy M. Jackson; and stepmother, Mary Lee Jackson.

William was married to Margaret Whitlow on June 15, 1946. To this union, two children were born.

He was a graduate of Washington High School and then entered the United States Army with two tours of duty. He was employed at West Virginia University Institute of Technology and then Bluefield State College, where he was director of the Physical Plant. While employed, he received numerous distinguished service awards.

He was a lifelong and faithful member of the First Missionary Baptist Church of London, where he served on the Trustee Board.

William was a longstanding member of Bright Hope Lodge 9, VFW and the West Virginia Association of Physical Plant Administrators.

Surviving: his loving and devoted wife, Margaret; sons, George (Brenda) of Scott Depot and James (Janet) of Mitchellville, Md.; sisters, Mary L. McDaniel of London and Phyllis Evans of Fort Washington, Md.; brother, Edward (Joan) Jackson of Rumford, R.I.; sister-in-law, Janet Cartledge of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A homegoing celebration was held Feb. 13 at the First Missionary Baptist Church of London with the Rev. Garland Johnson officiating. Interment was in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.

Ruth E. Judd



Ruth E. Judd, 86, of Beards Fork, died Feb. 11, 2008, in Montgomery General Hospital Extended Care after an extended illness.

Born in Spartanburg, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Charley and Melon Hawkins. She also was preceded in death by her husband, William Judd; a daughter, Nellie Hawkins; and granddaughter, Patricia Murray.

Mrs. Judd was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Beards Fork.

Surviving: children, Linda Stewart of Beards Fork, Brenda Evans of Washington, Pa., Cynthia Rollins of Beards Fork, William Judd Jr. of Beards Fork, Raymond Lee Judd of Montgomery, Meredith Judd of Beckley and Rhonda Lewis of Charlotte, N.C.; 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Service was Feb. 16 at O'Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery. Burial followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.

Donna S. Lyons, 50, of Glasgow, died Feb. 8, 2008, at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston, after a long illness.

William Curry McConihay, 93, of East Bank, died Feb. 13, 2008, at Marmet Health Care.

Ruth Craze Skaggs



Ruth Craze Skaggs, 94, of Mount Olive, died Feb. 10, 2008, at her home.

Born Aug. 29, 1913, at Bell Creek, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Samuel and Lula Mae Backus Craze. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Carl “Chay” Skaggs; a daughter, Betty Fox; and an infant son, Carl David Skaggs.

Ruth married Carl “Chay” Skaggs in 1934 and settled at Mount Olive. There they lived their entire lives and raised their children. The church, Mount Olive Baptist, was the center of their lives and were charter members since 1945, when “Chay” was ordained as a deacon and Ruth was elected as the church's first clerk.

Ruth loved to cook, always preparing more than was ever needed for church functions and family dinners. The church, her family and friends, and doing for others were her driving force all her long life.

She was a retired employee from the G.C. Murphy Store, Montgomery, for several years.

Ruth was the caregiver for her only sibling, Eula Craze, 85. For the past 12 years, Eula had made her home with Ruth.

Surviving, in addition to her sister: her three children and their spouses, Edward and June Skaggs of Mount Olive, Carol and Van James of Hugheston and Donna and Jay Petry of Cannelton; grandchildren and their spouses, Garland and Diane Francis, Lynn and Mike Littlecreek of Texas, Dodi and John Bowen of Pinch, Craig and Andrea Petry of Cannelton, Rod and Michelle Fox of Mount Carbon and Bobby Fox of Montgomery; and great-grandchildren, Angela Francis of Seattle, Wash., Curtis Mason and Shanna Littlecreek of Austin, Texas, Jared, Amanda and Samantha Bowen of Pinch, Jacob and Eli Petry of Cannelton and Michael Fox of Mount Carbon.

Funeral services were Feb. 13 at Mount Olive Baptist Church with Pastor Dennis Preast, Pastor Gary Tucker and Minister Craig Petry officiating.

Delcie Marie Boggs Taylor



Delcie Marie Boggs Taylor, 89, of Brownsville, died Feb. 9, 2008, at home following an extended illness.

Born Jan. 14, 1919, in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Alonzo and Eva Boggs. She also was preceded in death by children, Woodrow Taylor, Jackie Taylor and Docie “Norma” Ball.

Mrs. Taylor was a homemaker and a retired employee from Gauley Dry Cleaners after 20 years of service.

Surviving: daughters, Nancy Lively and husband, Paul, of Brownsville, Wanda Southall and husband, George, of Kenna, and Cammie Ball and husband, Henry, of Powhatan, Va.; 19 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

The service was held Feb. 11 at Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge, with the Rev. Charles Blankenship officiating. Interment was in Simms Cemetery, Swiss.

Edith Wilhoit



Edith Wilhoit, 83, of Peytona, formerly of Whitesville and Beckley, and a native of Gauley Bridge, died Feb. 11, 2008, in the Valley Center Nursing Home, South Charleston, after a long illness.
