Cheryl Lynn Naylor Booher



Cheryl Lynn Naylor Booher, 50, of Bristol, Va., formerly of Pratt, died March 4, 2008, in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Shirley Ann Bowles



Shirley Ann Bowles, 69, of Boomer, died March 1, 2008, in Montgomery General Elderly Care.

Born Oct. 27, 1938, in Cannelton, she was the daughter of Mildred Hamlin Bowles of Boomer and the late Robert Lee Bowles Sr. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert L. Bowles Jr. and Charles H. Bowles.

She was retired from Marriott International in Washington, D.C.

Surviving: her son, Kirk A. Bowles of Boomer; and brother, Harold F. Bowles of Smithers.

Services will be held at a later date.

Eugene R. ‘Gene’ Campbell



Eugene R. “Gene” Campbell, 87, of Ansted, died March 3, 2008, following a long illness.

Born April 23, 1920, at Edmond, he was the seventh son of the late Wade and Myrtle Smales Campbell. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda Taylor Campbell; sister, Ruby Criss; and brothers, Clyde, Harry, Cecil, George, Dudley and Frank Campbell. Gene was the last survivor of his immediate family.

Gene was married to his first wife, Wanda Taylor Campbell. for 50 years. They had two sons, John and Ralph. He was married to his second wife, Alice Smith Campbell, for almost 11 years.

He was a 46-year member of Ansted Baptist Church. A Baptist minister for 22 years, he pastored several churches, established and built a church in Ohio.

Mr. Campbell was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Army, serving time in North Africa, Italy, England and Scotland. He served on the Democratic Executive Committee for eight years, was a 10-year owner and operators of Tri County Paving, worked about 19 years at Alloy and Semet-Solvay, was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Hayden Lodge No. 113 AF and AM of Ansted.

Surviving: his wife, Alice; sons, John Campbell Jr. and his wife, Jackie, of Victor, and Ralph Campbell and his friend, Lynn Mossor, of Irondale, Ohio; grandchildren, Heather Campbell, Joni Campbell, Shawn Campbell and Christopher Campbell; a daughter-in-law, Libby Campbell of Ansted; half-sisters, Pansey Snodderly of St. Augustine, Fla., and Annie Clark of Kanawha Falls; half-brother, Riley Junior Propps of Florence, S.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Service was March 6 at Ansted Baptist Church with the Rev. Warren Gilpin officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor. Military rites will be conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post No. 3110. Masonic rites were conducted by the Hayden Lodge No. 113 AF and AM of Ansted.

Harry ‘Glen’ Frye



Harry “Glen” Frye, 69, of Hugheston, died March 4, 2008, at home under the care of hospice.

Born Aug. 18, 1938, in Hugheston, he was the son of the late Harry L. and Chloie Brown Frye. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine.

Mr. Frye was honorably discharged from the United States Army and he was retired from Cannelton Coal Company. He was a member of Local 8843 of the United Mine Workers, and was a member of OES Kanawha Chapter #38 and Coal Valley Lodge # 74 AF & AM in Montgomery.

Service was March 7 at Hughes Creek Community Church with Rev. Gary Tucker officiating. Entombment followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow.

Mary Jeanette Higginbotham



Mary Jeanette Higginbotham, 58, of Belle, died March 4, 2008, at home after a long illness.

Jerry Lee Painter



Jerry Lee Painter, 68, of Marmet, a native of Fayette County, died March 5, 2008.

David D. Russell



David D. Russell, 86, of Gauley Bridge, died March 4, 2008, at Valley Center, South Charleston, after an extended illness.

Born Aug. 19, 1922, in Hawks Nest, he was the son of the late David D. and Myrtle McGraw Russell. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte J. “Jackie” Russell; and sisters, Lillian Greene, April Nickell and Majel Farha.

Surviving: his sons and daughters-in-law, David III and Juanita Russell of Pittsburgh, Pa., Daniel Russell of Charleston, and Dana and Susan Russell of St. Albans; grandchildren, Elaine Russell, Andrew Russell, Megan Russell, Alex Russell and Gracie Russell; and a sister, Evelyn Croft of Gauley Bridge.

Service was March 6 at Gauley Bridge Baptist Church, Gauley Bridge, with the Rev. Chanon Mullens officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Rev. James Richardson Wilson Sr.



Rev. James Richardson Wilson Sr., of Victor, died Feb. 27, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital, after a short illness.

He was born Jan. 31, 1937, on the Knobbs, near Union, Monroe County.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Josephine Wilson, on Oct. 6, 2004; and sisters and brothers, Ruth Webster of Toledo, Ohio, Hazel Abell of Akron, Ohio, Lacy Wilson of Union, Marshall Wilson of Newark, Del., and Robert Wilson of Greenville.

Jim grew up in Monroe County, joined the military in April 1951 and was honorably discharged in April 1954. He married Mary Josephine Caldwell on Feb. 15, 1956. He traveled to Chicago, Ill., to study auto repair.

In 1963, in Elkton, Md., he received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. From 1964-68, he attended Tennessee Temple School in Chattanooga, Tenn. He pastored several churches in West Virginia, including Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, near Union; Baptist Bible Church, Hillsdale; Gum Spring Baptist Church, Chimney Corner; and Victory Independent Baptist Church, Victor.

Surviving: children, James R. Wilson Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Ansted, Myra G. Grose and husband, Jack, of Hico, Larry W. Wilson and wife, Diana, of Russellville, and Gary L. Wilson and wife, Susan, of Clifftop; sisters and brothers, Bessie Deiss of Pennsylvania, Nina Horn of Milton, Eva Sue Bouldin of Peterstown, Ruby June Woodruff of Lewisville, N.C., Frank D. Wilson of Union and Luther A. Wilson Jr. of Sinks Grove; grandchildren, Bethany Dawn Wilson of Berea College, Berea, Ky., and James R. Wilson III and Robert Anthony Wilson, both at home.

Funeral services were March 2 at Groves Funeral Home at Union, with burial at New Lebanon Cemetery, Lebanon. The Revs. George Clarkson and Walter Deskins were in charge of the service.

Clarence Roger Young



Clarence Roger Young, 65, of Charleston, formerly of Hugheston, died March 2, 2008, at home and was pronounced upon arrival at Saint Francis Hospital after a long illness.

Service was March 6 at Cooke Funeral Home, Cedar Grove, with Pastor Gary Tucker officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park.
