Charles M. Grose
Charles M. Grose, 68, of Summersville, died March 24, 2008, at home, following a long illness. He was a lifelong resident of Nicholas County.
Born Aug. 7, 1939, at Enon, he was the son of the late James Kenneth Grose and Edith Grose. He also was preceded in death by his stepmother, Delphia Chapman Grose; and his stepbrother, Dale Chapman.
Charlie was a retired coal miner, having spent 43 years in the industry. He worked 40 of those years for Terry Eagle Coal Co., ending his career as safety director. He touched the lives of many miners in Nicholas and surrounding counties through his annual training and electrical certification classes.
Charlie’s hobbies included active membership and leadership roles in the Wadcutters Rifle and Pistol Club. He also enjoyed many years of dancing with Wilma and his friends as members of the Lakeside Square Dancers.
In his retirement years Charlie enjoyed working on the farm and in his garden. He could also be found always supporting his grandchildren in their many activities.
He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather who lived a life of integrity and character. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.
Surviving: his lifelong love of 48 years, his wife Wilma Schoolcraft Grose; a daughter, Michelle Grose Klenk and her husband, Bill, of Fayetteville; a son, Joe Grose and his wife, Judy, of Summersville; a brother, James Eugene Chapman and wife, Donna, of Summersville; and his grandchildren, Rebecca and Sarah Klenk and Jacob and Jenna Grose, who were the joy of his life.
Service was March 27 at Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville, with the Rev. William Johnson officiating. Burial followed in West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin.

Marian Thomas Kirk
Marian Thomas Kirk, 68, of Bentree, died March 26, 2008, in CAMC General Hospital, Charleston, after an extended illness.
Born July 2, 1939, in Leewood, she was a daughter of the late Leslie William and Esther Virginia Ray Thomas. She also was preceded in death by a son, Terry Davis; and a sister, Peggy Cogar.
Mrs. Kirk was a homemaker and a member of First Church of God, Jodie.
Surviving: a daughter, Regina Keenan of Sutton; sons and their wives, Kenny and Sarah Perry of Bentree and Leslie and Tammy Davis of Lizemores; sisters, Blenda Evans of Jodie and Glenna Dyson of Grottos, Va.; brothers, Lindsey Thomas of Olympia, Wash., Benjamin Thomas of Greenville, and Joseph Thomas of Jodie; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Service was March 29 at the First Church of God, Jodie, with the Rev. Billy Morris officiating. Burial was in Rich Creek Community Cemetery, Jodie.

Mary Ruth Garrett Lynch
Mary Ruth Garrett Lynch, 81, of Montgomery, died March 23, 2008. After a long illness, Mary Ruth passed away peacefully at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Kanawha City. By her side were her daughter, Cathy Lynch, and dear family friend, Linda Snyder. During the final week of her earthly life, she was surrounded and comforted by the love of dear friends Nancy Masters Double, Barbara Perkins Fragale, Ann Frantz Griffith, Sandra Spaulding Lockard, Elizabeth Summers Potter, Debbie Wills Robson, and niece Dale Lynch Rothwell.
Mary Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Luther Garrett and Mary Ellen Hannah Garrett; by her sisters, Katherine Craig and Virginia Blankenship Williams; and by her nephew, Thomas G. Craig.
Surviving: her daughter, Cathy Lynch; and several cousins and numerous loving friends.
Mary Ruth was born on Dec. 29, 1926, and was a member of the Montgomery Baptist Church. She graduated from Montgomery High School and attended West Virginia Tech. She was a former employee of C&P Telephone Company and was a talented pianist and artist. She was a devoted and loving mother whose happiest times were spent with her home full of young people for whom she provided a safe and joyous environment and wonderful childhood memories.
She was a voracious reader, provided a wonderful home for dozens of beloved pets over the years, was a lover of history and art, and realized a lifelong dream when she and her daughter toured Europe.
Mary Ruth never met a stranger and touched many lives. She will be deeply missed.
The service was March 26 at O’Dell Funeral Home in Montgomery with Rev. Jeff Floyd officiating. Burial was at Montgomery Memorial Park in London.

Billie Skaggs
Billie Kaye Gilbert Skaggs, 65, of Oak Hill, died March 19, 2008, at her home following a long illness.
Born Sept. 7, 1942, at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Dorothy Mae Gilbert Payne and Roy Houston Payne Sr.
She was the retired owner for B&B Ambulance Co.
Mrs. Skaggs was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill. She was a member of the last graduating class of Kingston High School, Class of 1960.
Surviving: her true love, Robert Alden Skaggs I, formerly of Rick Creek; sons, Gary Payne of Virginia, David Skaggs of Oak Hill, Alan Skaggs of Oak Hill and Robert Skaggs II of North Carolina; daughters, Michelle Miller of Oak Hill, Angel Skaggs of Fayetteville, Melissa Malay of Page, Amanda Richardson of Ansted and Bobbi Skaggs of Oak Hill; a brother, Roy Payne Jr. of Oak Hill; sisters, Karen Elder of Oak Hill, Elsie Painter of Hilltop and Robyn Colemen of Hilltop; and grandchildren, Catherine Skaggs, Daniel Miller, Zachary Skaggs, Savannah Skaggs, Amanda Lynn Peters, Cameron Skidmore, Noe Skidmore-Skaggs and Davallen Skidmore.
Memorial service was March 24 at Calvary Baptist Church, Oak Hill.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
