Clarence Bowen


Clarence Bowen, 78, of Oak Hill, died April 10, 2008, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.
Born Oct. 10, 1929, at Longacre, he was the son of the late Clarence Bowen Sr. and Grace Tucker Bowen. He also was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lois Bowen, on March 7, 2006; a sister, Janet Bowen; a brother, Frank Bowen; and a son, Paul Bowen.
Clarence was a self-employed construction worker and a member of the Jones Avenue Church of God in Oak Hill, and attended the Carlisle Church of God.
Surviving: his son, Danny Bowen and wife, Vickie, of Fairfax, Va.; brothers, the Rev. Gene Bowen and wife, Marion, of Oak Hill, Allen Bowen of Charleston, James Bowen of Fredericksburg, Va., the Rev. John Bowen and wife, Jo, of Charleston, and the Rev. David Bowen of Malden; a sister, Jaunita See of Charlton Heights; granddaughters, Debbi Compton of Dumfries, Va., and Kim Bowen of Fayetteville; and great-grandchildren, Skyler and Kaitlyne Compton of Dumfries, Va.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of the service.
Interment will be in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Alex Dayton Ford Sr.


Alex Dayton Ford Sr., 70, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Corliss and Page-Kincaid, died March 14, 2008, at Memorial Hospital, Salem, N.J.
Born March 22, 1937, at Drennen, he was the son of the late Alex Ford and Virginia Butcher, and grandson of William E. and Almedia Shelton Ford and Cecil H. and Blanche Lamont Hill Butcher. He also was preceded in death by three beloved brothers, Darrell Dean Ford, Larry Bell Ford and Richard Allen Ford.
A 1956 graduate of Nuttall High School, Lookout, he was a decorated Air Force veteran of 23 years who served in Alaska, Germany, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos, and spent his remaining years living out his passion as a self-employed long-distance truck driver.
Surviving: children, Deborah Mae Ford of Syracuse, N.Y., and Alex Dayton Ford Jr. of Tucson; their mother, Beverly Hagemann of Syracuse; sisters, Almedia Jo Ford Cotter of Fairfax, Va., and Fonda Eugenia North of Tampa, Fla.; brothers, Cecil Edward Ford of Laconia, N.H., James Sheldon Ford of Tampa, and Terry Wayne Ford; fiancee, Carol Burr Woods of Gauley Bridge; and dear lifelong friends, Alma Burr of Corliss and Greer Kincaid of Kincaid.
Graveside rites officiated by the Rev. Delmas Wolfe will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at Shelton/Winebrenner Cemetery, Sulubon Lane, Drennen.
There will be a reception at 4:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on U.S. Route 19 in Oak Hill following the graveside rites. Friends and loved ones are cordially invited to the burial and/or reception.

Roy Lewis Grose Jr.


Roy Lewis Grose Jr., 81, of Mount Hope, formerly of Claremont, Fla., died April 11, 2008, at Hilltop Center.
Born Feb. 19, 1927, in Swiss, he was the son of the late Roy Lewis and Elouise Justus Grose. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Freddie Everett Grose; and a son, Freddie Lewis Grose.
Roy was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and attended Nicholas County High School until he enlisted in the Army to serve his country during World War II. Upon his return from military service, he graduated from Charleston Business School.
He was employed at Union Carbide, Jeffords & Moore as a bookkeeper and salesman, Playtex as a salesman, was a licensed real estate agent, and was the former owner and operator of the Grose’s Pike Motel on Harper Road in Beckley.
Roy will be remembered for his wit, gift of gab and the choices he made throughout his life. He was a free spirit and came and went through this life his own way.
Surviving: his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Margie Mullins Grose; a daughter, Pamela (David) Wilson of Victor; sons, Roger (Sharon) Grose of Marietta, Ohio, and Robert (Debra) Grose of Bentree; stepdaughter, Mary Ann (Garry) Baker of Bentree; grandchildren, Fred (Jennifer) Renick of Holden, Mo., Jennifer and Rebecca Grose of Princeton, Noah (Nikki) Grose of Lexington, Ky., Natalie Grose of Cincinnati, Ohio, Amanda Shelton of Cannelton, Jonathan (Beth) Grose of Gauley Bridge, Kelly (Jeff) Morton of Bentree, Justin (Kristi) Wilson of Rangeley, Colo., and Matthew Wilson of Victor; stepgrandchildren, Theresa Holley of Bentree and Kim Liming of Claremont, Fla.; 12 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
At Roy’s request, his earthly body was cremated and there will be no visitation.

John Hughes


John Hughes, 60, of Gallagher, died peacefully April 10, 2008, at CAMC Memorial Hospital, as his family held his hands. He lost a courageous battle with cancer but won a place in his heavenly home.
Born June 6, 1947, at Mahan, he was the son of the late Ora and Mary Lafferty Hughes. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Bob and Burnice Hughes; and nephews, David Hughes and Roy E. Adkins Jr.
Mr. Hughes was a long-time member of the UMWA and attended the Gallagher Church of the Nazarene. He was retired from Harris #1 mine of Eastern Associates Coal at Wharton.
Surviving: his loving wife, Wanda Lanaham Hughes; sons, John Hughes, Jr. and Mark Hughes and his wife, Tracey; daughter, Courtney Hughes; grandsons, Andrew Hughes and Mark Hughes, all of Gallagher; brothers, Franklin Hughes and his wife, Connie, and Willie Hughes and his wife, Carolyn ,both of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Robert Hughes and his wife, Peggy, of Pfafftown, N.C.; sisters, Juanita Hall and her husband, Frank, of Forsyth, Ga., and Mary Adkins and husband, Roy, of Montgomery; and a host of nephews, nieces and friends.
Service was April 14 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with the Rev. Daniel Saylor, the Rev. Dayton Lockand and the Rev. David Mitchell officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Bobby Gene Massey


Bobby Gene Massey, 75, of Pratt, formerly of Montgomery, died April 7, 2008, in Summersville Memorial Hospital.
Born May 20, 1932, in Montgomery, he was the son of the late Everett Wayne and Mamie Kirk Massey. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Hicks.
Mr. Massey was a former coal miner and retired construction worker.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and he was also a member of the VFW, Eagles Lodge and Moose Lodge.
Surviving: daughter, Christy Costakis and her husband, John, of Red Hook, N.Y.; grandchildren, John and Jacob Costakis; and sisters, Mary Heater of Pratt, Doris Camp of Newburgh, N.Y., Linda McClung of Charlotte, N.C. and Louise Daniels of Montgomery.
Service was April 11 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Claude R. Miller officiating. Burial followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow with military honors presented by Post #8366 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Gauley Bridge.

Courtney Elizabeth O’Dell


Courtney Elizabeth O’Dell, 2 1/2 months, of Bird Hollow Rd., Lizemores, died April 12, 2008, at home after a sudden illness.
She was born Jan. 23, 2008, at Summesville.
Surviving: father, Gary A. O’Dell of Lizemores; mother, Glenda McClain of Lizemores; brother, Jackob James Brown of Lizemores; maternal grandparents, Malinda Bird of Lizemores, Anthony McClain of Belva and Ronald Nichols of Lizemores; paternal grandmother, Marketta O’Dell of Indore; maternal great-grandparents, Ferrell and Karen Gray of Summersville; and paternal great-grandparents, Gene and Judy O’Dell of Glen.
Graveside service was April 15 at Elliott Cemetery, Lizemores.

Grace Sawyer


On April 9, 2008, Grace Jean Sawyer, 74, died at Montgomery General Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Montgomery, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Sawyer and Ruth Sawyer Clonch. She also was preceded her in death by her sister, Carol Arbaugh (Thomas), and her brother, Jack Sawyer.
She lived many years in Houston, Texas, where she retired from Harris County government. She was more recently a patient at Montgomery General Elderly Care Center.
Surviving: brothers, John Steven Clonch of South Charleston, and David Clonch (Deborah) of Dublin, Va.; sisters, Judith Conley (Joseph) of Drennen, Patricia Manley (Robert) of Mt. Carbon, Lona Dempsey (Ronald) of Shady Spring, and Irene Huuson (Raymond) of Arlington, Va.; an aunt, nephews, great-nephews, nieces, great-nieces, and cousins.
A memorial service was held at O’Dell Funeral Home in Montgomery April 12, with the Rev. Larry Huddleston officiating. Burial was in Hematite, Va.
