John Edward Churchwell


John Edward Churchwell of Eagle died Sept. 15, 2008.
He was born May 31, 1944, to Charles and Lorene Churchwell.
Surviving: his wife, Kaen; sons, Mack and Michael; daughter, Anita Munson; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters, Nancy King and Corrine Ferrell; and his (MIS) security guard family.
His body was donated to science.
A memorial service to honor his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at his home. All who knew him are invited to attend.

Kendra Lyn Duncan


Kendra Lyn Duncan, 16, of Falls View, died Sept. 18, 2008, at Falls View from injuries received after being struck by an automobile on Rt. 60 at Falls View.
Born April 18, 1992, in Charleston, she was the daughter of Kenneth L. Duncan of Indore and Kimberly Roland Duncan of Falls View.
She was a member of Bell Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church at Dixie.
Surviving, in addition to her parents: daughter, Dani’ Lyn Grace Hatfield, at home; maternal grandmother, Brenda Roland of Elkton, Md.; paternal grandfather, Carlos Duncan of Indore; sisters, Marlina Duncan of Falls View, Katelyn Duncan and Kenzie Duncan, both of Lizemores; and brother, Kenny Jack Duncan of Lizemores.
The service was held Sept. 23 at Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge, with the Rev. Lee Holliday officiating. Interment was at Elliott Cemetery, Lizemores.

Elvin Garretson


Elvin Edwin Garretson, 83, of Montgomery, died Sept. 15, 2008.
Born Aug. 22, 1935, at Ward, Kanawha County, he was the son of the late Homer and Addie Woodrum Garretson. He also was preceded in death by his son, Danny Lee Garretson; his sister, Helen Goodwin; and brothers, Homer Garretson Jr., Bobby Garretson and Edsel Garretson.
Mr. Garretson died of chronic heart disease and stage 5 renal failure. He fought too long and was so tired and on Sept. 15, he could fight no more.
He was retired as a river tipple operator from Central Appalachian Coal Company with 47 years of service, and he was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Merchant Marines.
Surviving: his wife of 65 years, Dolores; his daughters, Terry and Renee; his granddaughter, Sherry; and sons-in-law, Roger and Ray.
Service was Sept. 18 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Jeff Floyd officiating. Entombment followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow.

Lawrence ‘Sonny’ O’Neal


Lawrence “Sonny” O’Neal, 74, of Mt. Lookout, Nicholas County, died Sept. 18, 2008, at the Ansted Center.
Born Feb. 15, 1934, at Crown Hill, Kanawha County, he was a son of the late James Curtis and Isabelle Bass O’Neal. He also was preceded in death by five sisters.
Mr. O’Neal was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church at Mt. Lookout where he served as a deacon for over 40 years and was a retired coal miner.
Surviving: his wife of 38 years, Rose Mary Underwood O’Neal; sons, James Curtis and Elmer Walter O’Neal, both of Mt. Lookout; brother, George “Buss” O’Neal of Crown Hill; sisters, Sylvia Kelly of Crown Hill, Janet (Jim) Miller of Sunday Road, and Beatrice Beam of Mt. Lookout; an aunt, Mary Corbin of Dry Branch; and several nieces and nephews, and friends.
Funeral services were Sept. 21 in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church at Mt. Lookout with Rev. Phillip Lilly and Rev. Mark Secrist officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Jerry Lee Staten


Jerry Lee Staten, 66, of Montgomery, died Sept. 16, 2008.
Born Nov. 12, 1941, in Hugheston, he was the son of the late Theda and Elmer Staten.
Mr. Staten was a former coal miner, a veteran of the U.S. Marines and a member of the Eagles Club in Montgomery.
Surviving: wife, Candie Morris Staten; children, Angie Heater of Williamsburg, Va., Jerry Staten of Texas, Wayne Staten of Elkhart, Ind., Jayson Parker of Montgomery and Melanie Parker of St. Albans; sister, Nita Carroll of Montgomery; and 12 grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be given to the family.

William Schoolcraft


William “Sputt” Schoolcraft, 46, of Smithers, formerly of Elkridge, died Sept. 21, 2008, at Montgomery General Hospital after a long illness.
He was the son of the late Dencil and Barbara Schoolcraft, and was also preceded in death by a brother.
Surviving: wife, Karen Schoolcraft; daughter, Leah Dawn Schoolcraft of Smithers; sisters, Margie Holcomb and husband Rich of Boomer, Linda Schoolcraft and Barbara “Bepper” Schoolcraft, both of Cannelton; brothers, Dewey of Boomer and Tadpole of Virginia; one niece and one nephew; one step-daughter; two grandchildren; and one great-nephew.
Service was Sept. 23 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Greg Frances officiating.

Elsie Pearl DeBoard Williams


Elsie Pearl DeBoard Williams, 87, of Pax, died Sept. 18, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.
Born Aug. 18, 1921, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Emma Smith DeBoard. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Walter James Williams; an infant daughter, Sandra Renee; six brothers and four sisters.
Elsie was a member of the Beckley Seventh Adventist Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving: son, Terry Williams and wife, Tammy, of Cool Ridge; daughters, Robin Mullins and husband, Everette, of Pax, and Karen Basham and husband, Tony, of Beckley; a sister, Donna Young of Oak Hill; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and other loving friends and family members.
Services were Sept. 21 at the Pax Advent Church with Pastor Samuel Simuzoshya officiating. Burial was at Pax Community Cemetery, Pax.
