Freda Carolyn Auxier



Freda Carolyn Auxier, 62, of Swiss, died Nov. 9, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, of an extended illness.

Born Jan. 3, 1946, she was a homemaker and attended the Simms United Methodist Church at Swiss and The Swiss Missionary Baptist Church of Swiss.

Surviving: her daughters, Patricia Carver of Lizemores, Cathy Auxier of Swiss, Sherry Proctor of Enon and Terry Bryant of Hickory, N.C.; son, Michael Auxier of Lizemores; several brothers and sisters; and 12 grandchildren.

Service will be Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Rev. Gerald Proctor and Rev. Phillip Hickman officiating. Entombment will follow in Walker Memorial Park, Summersville.

Rachel Belle Bird



Rachel Belle Bird, 56, of Dixie, died Nov. 7, 2008, at home.

Born Dec. 11, 1951, in Charleston, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin H. “Hub” and Donna Rogers Stephenson. She also was preceded in death by her twin sister, Becky; and a brother, Bennie Stephenson.

Rachel was a homemaker, a member of Laurel Fork Missionary Baptist Church, Lizemores, and a former employee of Montgomery General Hospital and Summersville Memorial Hospital.

Surviving: her husband, Naamon R. Bird; stepdaughter, Roberta Bird of Jodie; sons, Jeremy Bird and Naamon Bird, both of Dixie; stepsons, Roger Bird of North Carolina and Gary Bird of Alta; sisters, Naoma Rutledge and husband Clyde of Dixie, Rena Mullins and husband John of Baltimore, and Mitzie O’Dell and husband Ralph of Dixie; brothers, Zane Stephenson and wife Terry of Shrewsbury and Roger Stephenson and wife Nancy of Baltimore, Md.; and special friends, Debbie Norton of Dixie, Cindy Deering of Swiss, Donna Roop of Summersville and Susie Ascue of Lizemores; and 11 step-grandchildren.

Funeral service was Nov.10 at Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge, with the Rev. Naaman H. Moore and the Rev. Jadie Morris officiating. Interment was at Clay Memorial Gardens, Clay.

Minnie Burke



Minnie Marie Evans Burke died Nov. 5, 2008, following a heart attack.

Born Feb. 14, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Viola Carry Evans. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Tede” Burke; son, Lawrence “Peachie;” daughter, Mary Lou; and four brothers and one sister.

She was retired from CSX Railroad YMCA at Handley and was a lifelong resident of the Paint Creek area.

Surviving: her children, Alice Hughes of Gallagher, Wilma Stewart of Belews Creek, N.C., Melody Bell of Belews Creek, Vickie Burke (Emmett) of Springfield, Ohio, and Rex Burke (Sandi) and Charity Haddox (Jeff), all of Walnut Cove, N.C.; sister, Mary Spaulding of Gallagher; 10 grandchildren, Jim, Allen, Michael, Chad, Evan, Valerie, Emily Bethany, Jeffery and Trey; 16 great-grandchildren, Nick, Josh, Hope, Taylor, Mikey, Brittany, Hailey, Charlie, Anabelle, Hannah, Sara, and Ella; and special nephews, Buddy, Jim and Joe Spaulding.

Service was Nov. 8 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. James Spaulding and Rev. Ervin Woodrum officiating. Entombment followed in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.

Janice Marie Girimont Ciampa



Janice Marie Girimont Ciampa, 88, of Montgomery, died Nov. 10, 2008, in Montgomery General Elderly Care.

Born Aug. 5, 1920, at Galloway, Harrison, County, she was the daughter of the late Michele and Maria Francesca Marullo Girimont. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Ciampa.

Mrs. Ciampa was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montgomery.

Surviving: several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montgomery with Fr. John Rice as celebrant.

Lorraine A. Danbery



Lorraine Alford Danbery died Nov. 4, 2008.

Born May 15, 1930, in Ivington, Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Jack Alford and Violet Tawney Alford. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Wanda, and brother, Jack Jr. Lorraine was the last of her immediate family.

During her growing up years, she was a tomboy. She could outride, outshoot and usually “whip” all those who would take her on. As an accomplished equestrian, she loved horses. She also loved dogs and those that came to live with her were treated as members of the family.

Lorraine lived the majority of her life in Cannelton, and was a faithful member of the Carbondale Baptist Church.

The tomboy grew into a beautiful woman with lovely blue eyes. Her adult life was spent rearing her children.

After they left home, she became very active in her church. When Carbondale Baptist Church decided to build a new church, members of the church began a major fundraising campaign. The women of the church were very instrumental in the completion of the new church. The church steeple was donated in honor of Lorraine’s mother and father. She, along with other members of the church, established a fund to help those who fell upon hard times. A great number in the community were helped.

She will be loved and missed forever.

Surviving: her husband of 62 years, Earl (Brother) Danbery Jr.; daughters, Sharon D. Griffith and Beverly Danbery Rosewell; sons, Rodney, Randy and Rick Danbery; son-in-law, Roger Griffith; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Rodney (Patrizia) Danbery; granddaughter, Angela Danbery; grandsons, Travis Griffith and his wife, Allyson, Brian Rosewell and his wife, Rene’, Douglas, Cody and Garrett Danbery; and her church family.

Service was Nov. 7 at Carbondale Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ron Eagle officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Etta Pauline Harvey



Etta Pauline Harvey, 87, of Jodie, died Nov. 8, 2008, at Montgomery General Elderly Care, Montgomery.

Born Aug. 1, 1921, at Mount Lookout, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Lida McClung Dotson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Don D. Harvey; daughter, Constance L. Cline; sisters, Norine Clark, Virginia Elswick, Juanita Sigmon, Peggy Loggin, and Connie Dotson; and brother, Garret Dotson.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving: daughters, Dixie Harvey of Albuquerque, N.M., Fran Rankin of Jodie, and Shannon Howery and husband Wayne; sons, Don A. Harvey and wife Ann, Paul Douglas Harvey, and Todd Harvey and wife Susie, all of Jodie, and David Harvey and wife Marie of Elkview; sisters, Kate Shaver, Betty Dotson, and Jackie Reed, all of Chicago, Ill.; and Bobby Kessler of Ferndale, Mich.; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was Nov.10 at Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge, with Minister Thomas McClung officiating.

Joan Jarrett



Joan Victoria (Vickie) Jarrett, 66, of Handley, formerly of East Bank, died Nov. 2, 2008, in St. Francis Hospital after a long illness, with her fianc้, Douglas Pauley, at her side.

She was the daughter of the late Jennings and Margaret Arthur of East Bank.

She was a life long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Charleston.

Surviving: her children and three grandchildren whom she loved so dearly, Gregory Jarrett and wife Darlene of Chesapeake, Shelley and Gary Morris and children, Tiffany and Zachary, of Kanawha City, and Michael Jarrett and wife Christy and son Christopher of St. Albans; and a sister, Renna Peters of East Bank.

Service was Nov. 6 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with the Bishop Eldon Larsen officiating.

Delfino Moschino



Delfino “Del” “Red” Moschino, 83, of Boomer, died Nov. 2, 2008.

Born Feb. 9, 1925, in Christopher, Ill., he was the son of the late Iginio “Eugene” and Pierina Moschino. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Alfonso “Al” Moschino; his daughter, Donna Elaine; and his son, Del Allen.

A veteran of both World War II and Korea, he worked at EMCO (later named Union Carbide) in Alloy until his retirement in 1981. He was a member and former officer of O.C.A.W. Local 3-89. He also was a loan officer at the Alloy Employees Federal Credit Union and was a member of both the VFW and American Legion.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic and St. Anthony Shrine Catholic Parrish in Montgomery and Boomer for more than 50 years; he also served as an usher.

He was a life charter member of the Knights of Columbus, in which he held offices of both financial secretary and Grand Knight for several years, in addition to being a past State District Deputy.

In addition to his church work, he was dedicated to his community and served as a volunteer in any way he was asked or needed.

Surviving: his wife of 61 years, Christine Mamino Moschino; children, Terry White and husband John of Mt. Nebo, Christy Ramsey and husband Tom of Montgomery and Gary Moschino and wife Brenda of Boomer; grandchildren, Nikki Williams and husband Tim “Buck” of Montgomery, Cassie White of Columbus, Ohio, Brandon Moschino and Joshua Moschino of Silver Springs, Md.; great-grandchildren, Alex, Devin and Anthony Williams of Montgomery; sisters-in-law, Palmina Moschino of Falls View, Madaline and Bill Dunning of Herrin, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial was Nov. 5 at St. Anthony Shrine Catholic Church in Boomer with Fr. John Rice as celebrant. Burial followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow with military honors presented by Post 7695 VFW of Ansted.

James L. Summers



James L. Summers, 92, of Maplewood, died Nov. 5, 2008.

He was the son of the late W.A. Summers and Bertie Ann Keenan Summers. He also was preceded in death by sisters, Maureen Hannah and Mamie Flowers, and half-sister, Mabel Bonar; brothers, John, Jack, William, and Edgar Summers, and half-brother, Buster Drennen; grandson, Eric Almond, and great-grandchild, Sylvia Lee Wilson.

Mr. Summers was retired from Union Carbide, South Charleston, with 35 years’ service.

He was a Marine Corps Veteran of World War II. He also served in the U.S. Army, and the Civilian Conservation Corps.

He attended Clifftop Community Church, was a member of Fisher’s Chapel, Romance, and raised his children in Fairview United Methodist Church.

He was a railroad buff, loved rocks, gardening, and farming.

Surviving: his loving wife of 66 years, Edith Summers; sisters, Vaughna Kitts of Scott Depot, Lucille Zir-kle, and Gynith Walker, both of Charleston; children and their spouses, Nancy S. Bright and Michael of Cross Lanes, James A. Summers and Patsy of Sissonville, Thomas W. Summers and Carolyn of Cross Lanes, Sarah S. Higgs and Mark of Mount Zion, and Donna Almond and Eddie of Grandview; grandchildren, Robin Eskins, Lori Wilson, James R. Summers, Angela Stone, Thomas A. Summers, Amy Baggett, Elizabeth Vuoso, Franklin Trabucco, Rachel Kirkham, Charles Almond, and 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was Nov. 8 at Long and Fisher Funeral Home, Sissonville, with Dale Preast officiating. Burial followed in Anderson Cemetery, Maplewood, with military honors provided by the United States Marine Corps.

Constance Ayersman Thornton



Constance Louise Ayersman Thornton of Morgantown died Nov. 2, 2008, at Golden Living Center in Morgantown.

Born in Morgantown, she was the daughter of the late John M. Ayersman and the late Gertie Moran Ayersman. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick E. Thornton, in 1995; a son, John F. Thornton, in 1989; a sister, Juanita Ayersman, in 1946; and a brother, John Ayersman, in 1993.

She was educated in Morgantown schools and graduated from Morgantown High School. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She lived in Friendship Manor for many years, having came to Morgantown after her husband’s retirement from West Virginia Tech in Montgomery in 1970.

Surviving: a daughter-in-law, Jean Thornton of Frederick, Md.; a sister, Edna Ruth Ayersman Wolfe of Morgantown; grandchildren, Thomas Thornton and his wife, Elaine, of Manassas, Va., Susan Hiles and her husband, Mike, of Frederick, Md., and David Thornton of Roanoke, Texas; great-grandchildren, Joshua Thornton, Jamie Thornton and Justin Kunkel; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was Nov. 8 at Hastings Funeral Home, Morgantown, with interment following in the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardnes, Westover.

Lila Deborah Young



Lila Deborah Young, 87, of Petersburg, died Nov. 7, 2008, at the Grant County Nursing Home.

Born May 17, 1921, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Alonzo Edwin Moore and Edna May (Brant) Moore. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth K. Young, on Dec. 5, 2003; a brother, Andrew Moore; and sisters, Lenora Bohrer, Evelyn Bollman, and Margaret Bittner.

She served in the U.S. Army and had worked at the Newton D. Baker Veterans Hospital in Martinsburg. She was a member of the Potomac Valley Baptist Church.

Surviving: sons, Ronald Young and wife Sandy of Petersburg, and David Young and wife Nancy of Richmond, Ind.; daughter, Kathryn Slough and husband John of Martinsburg; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and a brother, William Glenn Moore of Twin Falls, Idaho.

Funeral service was Nov. 10 at the Schaeffer Funeral Home with Pastor Ted Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville.
