Dorothy C. Hall Hunt

Mrs. Dorothy C. (Hall) Hunt, 88, a longtime resident of East Weymouth, Mass., died Aug. 29, 2009, at Weymouth Healthcare Center.

Dorothy Cole Hall, or “Dotsy” as her family called her, was born on Aug. 19, 1921, in Florence, Ala., the daughter of the late John Wendell Hall and Miriam Cole Hall. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Hunt; and her sisters, Miriam Hall Arbaugh and Margaret Heath Hall.

Because her father was a civil engineer who specialized in dams, she lived in Alabama, North Carolina, and Russia (now the Ukraine) before she settled in Montgomery, where she graduated as president of her high school class in 1939.

She attended school in Chicago before she worked as a secretary for Appalachian Power Company. She was active in the Montgomery Junior Women’s Club and she enjoyed playing the piano and traveling to Europe.

It was on a cruise to England that Dorothy met Bob, Robert D. Hunt, of East Weymouth, Mass., to whom she was married on Oct. 25, 1956, both wanting to see the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. They settled into his family home at 28 Cottage Street. Both worked at Hunt’s Store, 750 Broad Street, for many years. Dorothy selected the glass and silver items that could be bought for gifts, as well as cards for all occasions.

Dorothy was active for many years in the Old Colony Club, as well as being the president of the club from 1965-1966. Dorothy was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She attended many Rotary International events with Bob. They were members of the Congregational Church of East Weymouth for 53 years.

In recent years, Mrs. Hunt was a resident of Weymouth Health Care, where they referred to her as “our Southern lady.” She truly was a lady who always set others at ease. She loved cats, doting on the ones she and Bob adopted over the years.

Surviving: her nieces, Miriam Arbaugh Danzey of Knoxville, Tenn., and Janice Arbaugh Fisher (husband Gary), of Longmont, Colo.; Miriam’s children, Gordon Danzey (wife Ashley), Mariah Danzey (daughter Isabelle), and Corrie Danzey, all of Knoxville; Janice’s sons, Mark Fisher (wife Sandra; children Samuel and Elayna) of Frederick, Colo., and Roger Fisher (wife Katrina; daughters Jordan and Paige) of Lafayette, Colo.; and a couple who acted in many ways like a dear son and daughter to her over the years, Patrick and Catherine Fitzgerald of Weymouth.

Funeral service was Sept. 3 at the Congregational Church of East Weymouth with the Rev. Judith Martowska, the church’s pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the Hall family plot at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley, Mass.

Dorothy was a lover of cats, therefore it is appropriate that memorial donations may be sent to the Animal Rescue League, 10 Chandler Street, Boston MA 02116.
