Anna Carol Leeper Batey
Mrs. Anna Carol Leeper Batey, 67, of Greensboro, N.C., formerly of Harvey, died July 5, 2010, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Born June 25, 1943, in Kingsport, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late John F. Leeper and Willie Beatrice (James) Leeper. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel M. Batey, but also 21 brothers and sisters (whom she shared the same father); daughter, Muriel Elaine Leeper; and son, Michael Dwayne Batey.
Mrs. Batey was a Head Start teacher for 16 years.
Surviving: her children, Hope Celeste Leeper (Michael) Morgan of Whipple, Samuel M. Batey Jr. of Tampa, Fla., William E. Batey of Greensboro, N.C., John A. (Hope) Batey of Farrell, Pa., Kenneth A. Batey of Beckley and Marion Dykes (Leonard) Coolidge of Tampa; brothers, James Lewis Leeper of Greensboro and Elmer Richardson of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Anne Richardson Tynes and Ida Bell Richardson, both of Columbus; sister-in-law, Rosa Mae Batey Grooms of Smithers; a special friend and caretaker, Joyce Swinney of Greensboro; two special granddaughters, Gloria Willis of Columbus and Yvonne Gordon of Greensboro, who also was her caretaker; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorial service was July 16 at Heart of God Ministries, Beckley, with Bishop Fred T. Simms officiating.

Lonnie Frank Cooper
Lonnie Frank Cooper, 58, of Victor, died July 18, 2010, following a short illness.
Born March 6, 1952, at Gauley Bridge, he was the son of the late Elza Ezra and Mandy Lucille Cooper. He also was preceded in death by a brother, William Fredrick Cooper.
Lonnie was a trustee of Emmanuel Baptist Church, a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA, a loving father of three and proud grandfather of five, as well as an active WVU sports fan.
Surviving: his wife of 40 years, Cora Leah Cooper; son, Christopher Tony Cooper and wife Brenda of Victor; daughter, Debra Lynn Cooper-Ellison and husband Michael of Huntington; son, Shawn Michael Cooper and wife Stacy of Victor; five deeply loved and cherished grandchildren, Abigail Grace, Alexander Davis, Kaylee Marie, Kendra Nevaeh and baby Cooper; brothers, Donald Lee Cooper of Mobile, Ala., the Rev. Ronald James Cooper of Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Rev. Elza Ezra “Jr.”Cooper of Chimney Corner, Wayne Arthur Cooper of Oak Hill and David Luman Cooper of Gauley Bridge; and sisters, Joyce Marie Belt of Bomont, Janet Faye Ocheltree of Smoot and Anna Belle Vandall of Fayetteville.
Services were July 23 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted, with Pastor Justin Seay officiating. Burial followed at Cooper Family Cemetery on Willis Branch Road in Victor.

Tammy Renee Holder
Tammy Renee Holder, 40, of Advance, N.C., died July 19, 2010.
Born Dec. 21, 1969, she was the daughter of Frank Conn and Shonet Spencer Holley.
Tammy was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Mike and Mary Conn; a grandson, Aydin Kinder; and an aunt, Cindy Hudnall.
Surviving, in addition to her parents: her stepfather, Larry Holley; stepmother, Karen Conn; her husband, Donald Holder; daughters, Asgton Fernatt and Shawnay Kinder; sons, Nicholas Michael Holder and Jaydon Michael Ray Holder; grandchildren, Braiden Fernatt and Kaylee Fernatt; stepsisters, Jeana Stonestreet, Bethany Tolliver, Melissa Carver and Jennifer Ross; stepbrother, David Ross; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Tommie and Wayne Loggins; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ray and Dawn Holder; maternal grandparents, Jim and Jo Kilburn; sisters-in-law, LeeAnn Keen and Katie Holder; and a host of other friends and family.
Funeral services were July 23 at Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, with Pastor Jim Franklin officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Milton.

Earl Allen Jenkins
Earl Allen Jenkins, 59, died as a result of an accident on his farm in Spencer July 18, 2010.
Allen was the son of Earl E. Jenkins of Smithers and the late Gypsy Louise Jenkins. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Belinda, and his sister, Lois C. Jenkins.
Allen graduated from Montgomery High School and attended WV State College at Institute. He lived most of his adult life in Smithers. He was retired from Elkem Metals in Alloy.
Allen purchased a farm and moved to Spencer after his retirement. He enjoyed his farm and caring for his cattle, attending church and spending time with his son and daughter-in-law. Allen enjoyed meeting up with his friends at the McDonald’s in Spencer for coffee and conversation in the mornings.
Allen was referred to as Santa Claus by his nieces and nephews because of his long white beard.
He was a member of Cherry Valley Church and Good Hope Church, both in Spencer. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
Surviving: son, Earl A. Jenkins Jr. and wife Crystal of Spencer; stepsons, Billy Turley and wife Mary of Dunbar and Lawrence E. Holbrook of Oak Hill ; grandchildren, Jacqueline Renae and Rebecca Dawn; one brother and five sisters.
Funeral service was July 24 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Pastor Wilson Hudson officiating. Burial followed at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.

Charles Knight
Charles L. “Sonny” Knight, 87, of Sweet Briar Assisted Living in Dunbar and formerly of Montgomery, died July 21, 2010.
Born July 29, 1922, at Glen White, he was the last surviving of six children of the late Jesse and Mamie Knight. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Ware Knight.
Mr. Knight was a retired electrical supervisor from Union Carbide at Alloy and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was a member of the Montgomery Baptist Church and he loved boating, camping and fishing at Summersville Lake.
Surviving: daughters, Kay Jr. Bays and her husband, Bobby, and Cheryl Daniels and her husband, Lindsey.
Service was July 23 at Montgomery Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. Entombment followed in the mausoleum.

John Darrell McClung
John Darrell “Bingy” McClung, 76, of Jodie, died July 21, 2010, at home.
Born March 1, 1934, he was the son of the late Melvin and Dottie McClung.
He was a construction worker for Local #1353 and a coal miner.
He was a Jehovah’s Witness by faith, and an Army veteran.
Surviving: his wife, Donna McClung of Jodie; daughter, Robin McClung of Summersville; sons, Richard McClung of Farmington, Va., and Tony Wilson of Jodie; grandsons, Josh and Colin Neal; and great-grandsons, Zayman and Eric Riley Neal .
Graveside services and burial were July 23 at the Rich Creek Community Cemetery, Jodie, with speaker Thomas Lee McClung officiating.

Alonzo Mike Miller
Alonzo Mike Miller, 56, a life-time resident of Handley, died July 18, 2010, at his home following a short illness.
Born March 25, 1954, at Handley, he was the son of the late John and Ruby Wilkerson Miller.
He graduated from East Bank High School and was employed by Bethlehem Steel, Donaldson Mine and Valley Camp Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA.
Alonzo Miller received the Lord at an early age.
Surviving: children, Carrie Miller of St. Albans, Atesha Smith of Montgomery, Alonzo Jr. of Dunbar and Ta Ta Smith of Charleston; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Rodick Miller Sr. of Farrell, Pa., twin brother Ike Miller of Farrell, Pa., and Frank Miller of Montgomery; sisters, Betty Miller of Philadelphia, Pa., Johnnetta Miller of Farrell, Pa., Mary Terry of Farrell, Pa., Judy Evans of Cleveland, Ohio, and Alice Brown of Las Vegas.

Charles Dennis ‘Chuck’ Moses
Charles Dennis “Chuck” Moses, 53, of Fayetteville, died July 13, 2010, at his home.
Born Jan. 13, 1957, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late John Albert and Syble Charlene Sears Moses.
Chuck was a retired Deputy Sheriff for over 30 years in Fayette County and was a well-respected and loved member of the community. He was former president of the West Virginia Fraternal Order of Police and was the first Deputy to hold the position. He was also a member of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association.
Upon retiring from the police force, he drove a rock truck at the coal mines and continued to make an impact for all those he met.
Chuck loved Harley-Davidson motorcycles, his German shepherd Zeus and was an avid NASCAR fan. He enjoyed spending time, eating dinner out, going to the movies and holding court at Walmart.
Surviving: his children, Charles D. Moses II, of Fayetteville, Stacy A. Moses of Oak Hill and Chanda K. Brown of Hillsville, Va.; and his grandchild, Jason David Moses of Beckley.
A celebration of Chuck’s life was held July 16 at the Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill.

Willam Elbert Queen
Willam Elbert Queen, 92, of Fort Seybert, died peacefully July 10, 2010, at the Pendleton Manor, Franklin.
Born Jan. 5, 1918, in Logan County, he was the son of the late Frank and Minnie Bell Queen. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Ernie Stollings Queen; eight brothers and sisters; grandson, Kevin; and a son-in-law, Bill, the late husband of Margaret Moran.
Mr. Queen retired from Union Carbide Corporation in Alloy in 1978 after working 40 years.
He was a longtime resident of Boomer, and then Martinsburg after retirement.
Surviving: his children, Margaret Moran of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Peggy and Bernie Andrews of Naples, Fla., Brenda and Bill Thorn of Fort Seybert, and Dr. William and Patricia Queen of Martinsburg; grandchildren, Tom and Liz Moran of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Jaye and Andrea Andrews of Dallas, Andrea and Steve Hill of Raleigh, Jeffrey and Victoria Rhodes, and Tim and Christie Rhodes, all of Los Angeles, Candy and Mike Gibson of Littlestown, Pa., Cindy and Dave Kraynie of Chadds Ford, Pa., Wesley and Sarah Queen of Raleigh, and Dr. Whitney Queen of Martinsburg; great-grandchildren, Wesley, Michael, and Sarah Moran, Melanie, Camille, and Ellen Margaret Andrews, Austin and Kelsey Hill, William, Jack, Michael, and Nick Rhodes, Jordan, Devon, and Matthew Rhodes, Frank Gibson, and Erin and Sarah Kraynie; sister, Billie Adams of Ripley; brother, Frank Queen and his wife, Jan, of Ocala, Fla.; and his beloved brother-in-law, Dennis Stollings, and his wife, Joy, of Chapmanville.
A celebration of his life will be held Aug. 7 at 3 p.m. at the New Life Community Church, 4102 Tabler Station Road, Inwood, with Pastor Jim Goforth officiating.

Delma Gean Vanscoy
Delma Gean Vanscoy, 63, of Gauley Bridge, died July 20, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Born Sept. 3, 1946, at Elkins, she was the daughter of the late Delbert Glen and Wilda Jane Isner Vanscoy. She also was preceded in death by her brother, James Vanscoy.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving: brothers, Jerry Vanscoy and Walter Vanscoy; and sisters, Mary Katherine Waybright and Sandra V. Geter.
Ms. Vanscoy was cremated. There will be no visitation or service.
