Frances James DiVita

Francis James DiVita, 80, of Montgomery, died Jan. 24, 2010.

Born Sept. 9, 1929, in Smithers, he was the son of the late Benny and Josephine Maruca DiVita.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montgomery and a charter member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a graduate of Montgomery High School and West Virginia Institute of Technology and was a former school teacher and band director.

Mr. DiVita was the owner of Montgomery Motors, a veteran of the United States Air Force and former mayor of the City of Montgomery.

He was retired from the WV Public Service Commission.

Surviving: wife, Wanda DiVita; children, Beverly Skinner and her husband, Joseph, of Cary, N.C., Cheryl Belcher of Charleston, S.C., Jane Sonnett and her husband, William, of Marietta, Ga., James D. DiVita and his wife, Penny, of Shrewsbury, Francis C. DiVita and his wife, Dawn, of Erwin, Ky., Dana Shears and his wife, Patti, of Cary, N.C., and Suzette Shears Deaton and her husband, Jeff, of Morehead City, N.C.; brothers, Gene DiVita of Houston, Texas, Edward DiVita of Santa Barbara, Calif., Bobby DiVita of Michigan, Philip DiVita of Charleston and Richard DiVita of Scott Depot; sister, Phyllis Jane Woody of Omaha, Neb.; 18 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial was Jan. 27 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montgomery with Fr. John Rice as celebrant. Entombment followed in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.

Kenneth Edward Hudnall

Kenneth Edward “Kenny” Hudnall, 59, of East Bank, died Jan. 24, 2010.

Born Aug. 3, 1950, he was the son of the late Frank and Joyce Mullens Hudnall. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Andy Hudnall.

Mr. Hudnall was a Viet Nam veteran of the 12th Batallion of the 1st Calvery.

Surviving: wife, Danielle Yauger Hudnall; children, Edward Hudnall and his wife, Brandi, of East Bank, Travis of Paint Creek, Ryan Yauger of Blacksburg, Va., and Chris Layne of East Bank; grandchildren, Blake, Katelyn and Carson; brother, Joe Hudnall of Plantation, Fla.; sisters, Carol Workman of Hansford, Margie Hutt of Hampton, Va., and Laura Dicken of Chesterfield, Va.; and his beloved sister-in-law, Beth Steinberg Hudnall of Charleston.

Memorial service was Jan. 27 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Fr. Stan Holmes officiating.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Viet Nam Vets Association.

Opal H. Nichols

Opal H. Nichols, 86, of Tallahassee, Fla., died Jan. 22, 2010, at Big Bend Hospice House.

Born in Mingo County on May 7, 1923, Opal was the only child of Robert Allen and Letha Bond Hartman.

She lived most of her life in the areas around Montgomery and Charleston. She was married for 51 years to C.F. Nichols who died in 1992.

Upon retirement they moved to Florida and lived at various times in the Ft. Myers and Callahan areas before she relocated to Tallahassee to be nearer her daughters and grandchildren.

Opal enjoyed gardening, watching the birds and squirrels at her feeder and her cats, Cassie and Toto. She loved babies and animals of all kinds.

Surviving: daughters, Ms. Sandra N. Updike and Deborah A. Lightsey; her son-in-law, Larry Updike; grandchildren, Mark S. Earley, Eric C. Earley, and Heidi Updike Butler (Robert C. Butler); great-grandsons, Preston A. and Braden N. Earley, all of Tallahassee; and family remaining in West Virginia, nieces, Anne Cavalier and Peggy Lynn Smith.

A private family service was held in Florida and her ashes will be interred in her home state of West Virginia.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Leon County Humane Society (413 Timberlane Rd.- 32312) or the Tallahassee Leon County Animal Shelter (1125 Easterwood Dr.-32308).

Wanda Young

Wanda Faye Young 69, of Bentree, died Jan. 27, 2010, at CAMC Memorial Division.

Born April 16, 1940, at Beards Fork, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Retha Landers Young. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Russell Young; and brother, Kenneth Young.

She was an in-home caretaker and dispatcher for Valley Ambulance.

Surviving: her sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Sandy Young of Dixie, Paul and Barbara Smith of Cherryville, N.C., and Russell and Sis Young of Lizemores; daughter and son-in-law, Sonja and Steve Bolen of Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Ed Voiers of Gallipolis Ferry, and Brenda Guest of Berea, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Bob Dickerson of Aurora, Ohio.

Funeral services were Jan. 31 at the Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Minister Bobby Dulaney officiating. Burial followed in the Clay Memorial Gardens.
