Sherry Lynn Bird

Sherry Lynn Bird, 56, of Kimberly, died Feb.  21, 2010.

Born March 23, 1953, in Montgomery, she was the daughter of the late Delmar and Joetta Shears McCallister. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Steven Bird; brother, Ronnie McCallister; and sisters, Rhonda McClellan and Lynn Fauber.

Mrs. Bird was a registered nurse with 36 years of service with St. Francis Hospital in Charleston.

Surviving: daughter, Jessica Richards and granddog “Keble” of San Diego, Calif.; sons, Jeremy Bird of St. Albans and Steven Bird and his wife, Theresa, of Cannelton; grandchildren, Emily and Niedra; and brother, David McCallister of Ansted.

Service was Feb. 27 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery.

Gene Carte

Gene Carte, 64, of Charleston and Seebert, died Feb. 27, 2010, at home, surrounded with love in the company of his wife, Ann, and his two sons, Clint and David.

Born Jan. 28, 1946, in Charleston, Gene was the only child of Dorothy Virginia and Gene Carte Sr.

He was raised in Smithers, graduated from Montgomery High School in 1963, West Virginia University in 1967 and the West Virginia University College of Law in 1970. Gene was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, and president of his law class.

He served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. In January 1974, he received the Joint Service Commendation Medal from the Department of Defense for meritorious service.

In addition to practicing law for 20 years in Fayetteville with James Blankenship, Gene served as a Fayette County Commissioner from 1986 to 2000. Prior to that, he was also an assistant Fayette County prosecutor. At the time of his death, he was serving as counsel to the WV Senate Committee on Economic Development, a position he had held since 2000.

Gene’s parents opened a restaurant in Smithers called the Burger Carte in 1963, and it became a local icon. After his parents died, Carte had different people manage the restaurant. In 2008, he sold the Burger Carte to Doug and Debbie Divita.

Gene was an avid reader, a tennis player, a philosopher and poet, a trout fisherman, and an adventurer and traveler. He was a friend to many, an aficionado of James Joyce and anything Irish and a seeker for knowledge.

Next to being at his cabin on the Greenbrier River, he was happiest when playing with his tennis groups at Edgewood Country Club and the Charleston Tennis Indoor Center, or participating in his reading and philosophy groups, or exploring new places.

Surviving: his wife, Ann Hosey Garcelon; his sons, Willard Clinton Carte of Washington, D.C., and David Hedrick Carte of Charlotte, N.C.; his beloved mother-in-law, Bernice Hosey of Charleston; an aunt, Frances Carte Webb of Greer, S.C.; and first cousins, Charles (Betty) Morton of Charleston, Richard (Carol) Smith of Fayetteville, Willard Smith of Piedmont, S.C., Mike Lilly of Port Hueneme, Calif., Terri Lilly of Camden, Maine,  Ruth Ann (Mrs. Robert) Cavalier of Smithers, Karen (Mrs. Hamilton) Reid of Charleston, Pam Lively of Greer, S.C., and Melinda Catalano of Florida.

He donated his body to medical science at West Virginia University. A literary tribute to Gene will be held in March at the Kanawha County Public Library and a celebration of his life will be held later in Seebert.

Courtney Cordle

Courtney “Gail” Cordle, 75, of Smithers, died Feb. 28, 2010, in University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Born Nov. 25, 1934, in Long Branch, she was the daughter of the late Seibert and Clemma Ayres Warren. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, Seibert Warren Jr. and Richard “Dick” Warren.

Gail was retired from the State of West Virginia and had been a former employee of G. C. Murphy’s in Montgomery.

She was an active member of Campbell Memorial Baptist Church in Smithers where she was a member of the Grace Hatch Circle and assistant church treasurer. She also was a volunteer at Montgomery Elderly Care Center.

Gail was a resident of the Montgomery and Smithers area for more than 55 years. She was a caring and loving friend to many.

Surviving: daughters, Patricia Gail Murphy and her husband, Joe, of Greenup, Ky., and Brenda Darlene Burney and her husband, Tommy, of Clarksville, Tenn.; sisters, Celia Williams of Fayetteville, Marilyn Patton of Hilliard, Ohio, and Joyce Spade of Mt. Hope; grandchildren, Patti Jo Loree and her husband, Craig, Brian Murphy, Aaron Murphy and Courtney Burney; and great-grandchildren, Alex, Frankie, Jake and Josh.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4 at Campbell Memorial Baptist Church in Smithers with Rev. Chester Bird officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. on Wednesday at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Charles Hill

Charles R. “Buddy” Hill, 63, of Smithers, died Feb. 28, 2010.

Born Jan. 24, 1947, in Fairmont, he was the son of the late Charles R. and Mildred Stotlemire Hill. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Helen C. Baker, and brother, James Hill.

Mr. Hill was retired from Cannelton Coal Company with 31 years of service and was a member of the UWMA.

He was a member of Campbell Memorial Baptist Church in Smithers and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and he loved the outdoors.

Surviving: wife, Heidi Steitz Hill; son, Frank Hill and his wife, Debbie, of Cedar Grove; grandson, Brian Hill of Smithers; sisters, Dessie Perry and her husband, Tony, of Fairmont, Bessie Toothman of Fairmont and Cookie Aliff and her husband, Frank, of Milton; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 3, at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with the Rev. Chester Bird officiating. Burial will follow in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow.

Donna Jean Hudson

Donna Jean Hudson, 75, of Powellton, died Feb. 24, 2010, in Dayton, Tenn.

Born Dec. 9, 1934, in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Leroy and Myrtle Mae Lovejoy Shears. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Otis “Odie” Hudson.

She was retired from Kroger in Smithers.

Surviving: daughter, Linda Hurt and her husband, John, of Dayton, Tenn.; sister, Shirley Shears of Kimberly; and several nieces and nephews.

Service was March 2 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Rodney Nicholas officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.

Arnold Jackson

Arnold “Joe” Jackson, 57, of Morris Drive, Montgomery, died Feb. 23, 2010, at home after a long illness. 

Born April 30, 1952, in Montgomery, he was the son of the late Charles and Catherine Mason Jackson. He also was preceded in death by his nephew, Joseph “Scott” Dressler; his sister-in-law, Earlina Jackson; and his loving companion, Freda Sturgill.

Mr. Jackson was retired from Central Appalachian Coal Company and worked for Allied Security for many years.

He was a member of the FOE Aerie #1040 in Montgomery. Joe loved laughter and never turned anyone away.

Surviving: brothers, Charles Jackson, Robert Jackson, James and his wife, Clara Jackson, and Gerald Jackson, all of Morris Drive; sister, Mary Sue and her husband, Scott Farley, of Pratt; stepchildren, Dawn Allen of Ohio and Deanna Marsico of Mt. Carbon; many nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren; and caregivers, Gina Gray and Beth Nickoson, both of Morris Drive, and Shawn Crist.

Service was Feb. 26 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Roger Comer officiating. Burial followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow.

Thomas Kinney

Thomas “Tom” Kinney, 90, of Carbondale, died Feb. 21, 2010, at home after a long illness.

Born April 5, 1919, in Louisa County, Va., he was the second of four children born to the late Thomas Kinney and Eudora Lewis.

Surviving: his devoted wife of 64 years, Daisy Minor Kinney; daughters, Pearl Davis and her husband, James, of Montgomery, and Irene Bradshaw of Louisa, Va.; sons, Rev. William Issac and his wife, Gloria, of Charleston, Jeremiah of Carbondale, Kalvin of Tampa, Fla., and Curtis of Louisa, Va.

A viewing was held Feb. 25 at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Carbondale. His homegoing celebration was held Feb. 27 at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Louisa, Va., with the Rev. William Issac Kinney officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Margaret S. ‘Pat’ O’Malley

Margaret S. “Pat” O’Malley, 88, of Hansford, died Feb. 24, 2010, at CAMC Memorial Hospital while surrounded by loving family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George V. O’Malley Sr.; sister, Victoria Smith; and great-grandson, Logan Workman.

Pat was a loving wife and devoted mother, and a grandmother who you didn’t want to cross. In addition, she was a U.S. Army WAC, a restaurant owner, ceramics maker, and secretary for the WV Medical Licensing Board.

Pat joined a traditional Irish family when she married George V. O’Malley Sr. She immediately developed the necessary Irish traits of temper, stubbornness, and attitude, all of which have been passed down to each and every child and grandchild.

After retirement, game playing and crossword puzzle working became important pastimes. Pat was the family’s Yahtzee, Go Fish, Uno, and Canasta champion, and had no pity on anyone she played, including her grandchildren.

Throughout her years, Pat enjoyed telling stories and sharing experiences from her travels around the globe. If there was a car being packed heading on a trip, you could bet she wouldn’t be too far behind with suitcase in hand.

Newfound interests of wheelchair cornhole and Bingo were developed during her brief stay in Charleston Gardens.

She was an active member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Hansford.

Surviving: her children, Carol Workman and husband Charles “Boonie,” and Carolyn “Mikki” Payne and husband Dan, all of Hansford, Kathleen Mannion and husband James of Nitro, and George V. “Butch” O’Malley Jr and wife Jamie of Charleston; grandchildren, Charles Workman Jr., Erin Newell, Rosemary Hughes, J.B. Workman, Michael Mannion, Vince Payne, Megan Mannion, Patrick O’Malley and Meredith O’Malley; and great-grandchildren,Nicholas Hughes, Brandon Workman, Cassidy Workman, and Evan Newell.

Funeral service was held at O’Dell Funeral Home in Montgomery on Feb. 27.

William Stanley


William “Willie” Stanley, 58, of Montgomery, died Feb. 22, 2010.

Born Feb. 14, 1952, he was the son of Harold Stanley of Smithers.

Surviving, in addition to his father: sister, Dorothy Oiler of Smithers.

Service was Feb. 26 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Frank Brown officiating. Burial was in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.

Augustine Wallace Sr.

Mr. Augustine Wallace Sr., 82, of Crouse St. Oak Hill, died Feb. 6, 2010.

Born Aug. 20, 1927, in Lowe, he was the son of the late Watson Wallace Sr. and Marie Byrd Wallace. He also was preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda; son, Randall; brothers, Charles, William, Watson Jr., Delmar, Emory Sr. and Frederick; and sister, Juanita.

Mr. Wallace was a retired coal miner.

Surviving: his wife, Queen Esther Randall Wallace; sons, Augustine Jr. (Connie) of College Park, Ga., Derrick (Laura) of Beckley and Michael (Dianna Cox) of Mt. Hope; daughters, Deidra and Leah, both of High Point, N.C., Charlotte of Alsip, Ill., Wanda (Brad) of South Charleston and Demita (James) of Oak Hill; brothers, Judson (Bertha) of Montgomery, Joseph (Erma) of Buffalo, N.Y., and John of Oak Hill; a sister, Lonzetta of Flint, Mich.; adopted brother, Guiseppie of Summerlee; adopted sister, Maria Hall of Detroit, Mich.; 18 grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Feb. 13 at Outreach for Christ Christian Center, Beckley, with Rev. Thomas Steelman, Rev. Joseph Wallace and Minister Brad Williams officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
