Wesley V. Akers
Wesley V. Akers, 76, of Glen Ferris, died May 23, 2010, in Montgomery General Hospital.
Born Dec. 24, 1933, at Quinwood, he was the son of the late Quince and Emma Chrisman Akers.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Surviving: his soulmate, Sandy Tinnel of Falls View; sisters, Martha Tilley of Charlton Heights and June Wills of Smithers; brother, Ray Akers of Warren-Robbins, Ga.; and many friends and neighbors.

Chester Boyd
Chester Boyd, 74, of Powellton, died May 28, 2010, at his home.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Carbondale Baptist Church. Entombment will be in High Lawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Robert Brown
Rev. Robert Lee “Bob” Brown Sr., 82, of Waukesha, formerly of West Virginia, died May 25, 2010, surrounded by family at Waukesha Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 14, 1928, in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Eugene and Ollie (Hogarth) Brown. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Annabelle Heck, and brother, Eugene Brown.
Bob was united in marriage to Lucille Oliver on March 12, 1947. After proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy and Army, Bob became an ordained minister and served various churches over the years in West Virginia. He also spent many years working as a coal miner. Upon retirement, Bob and Lucille moved to Wisconsin and have resided in Waukesha. He will be remembered as a hard worker and beloved husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving: his wife of 63 years, Lucille Brown of Waukesha; children, Lucille Brown of Waukesha, Robert L. (Becky) Brown Jr. of Minnesota, Mike (Kathy) Brown Sr. of California, and Gregory (Laurie) Brown Sr. of Waukesha; grandchildren, Teri (Jeff) Karlinsky, Steven Krivitz, Kelly Jacobson, Jaime Decker, Robert L. (Maria) Brown III, Billy Lee Brown, Mike Brown Jr., Molly (Andy) Budd, Felicia (Carlos) Garduno, Gregory A. Brown Jr., and Cassandra Brown; great-grandchildren, Tony, Zak, Kodi, Stephanie, Samantha, Tom, Julia, Josh, Kasey, Alexis, Jordyn, Brady, Kalie, Alyassa, and Yanitza; and brothers, Ralph Brown of Tennessee and George Brown of West Virginia.
Burial was May 28 at Prairie Home Cemetery with full military honors presented by D.J. Martin American Legion Post 8.

Sophia Jane Worley Canterbury
Sophia “Jane” Worley Canterbury, 73, of Daniels, died May 27, 2010, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness.
Born Aug. 15, 1936, at Bolt, she was the daughter of the late Dallie and Lillie Richardson Worley. Mrs. Canterbury also was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Judge Thomas B. Canterbury;by a grandson, Michael L. Meadows IIl.; and by a brother, Clarence Worley.
Mrs. Canterbury was a graduate of Trap Hill High School and attended Beckley College. She was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County, having lived at Daniels, for the past 43 years.
Mrs. Canterbury was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of the Daniels Missionary Baptist Church at Daniels, and was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She loved her family more than anything, and she enjoyed playing the piano and organ, singing, gardening, cooking, mowing, and helping and caring for others.
Surviving: children, Thomas Canterbury II of Beckley, Timothy Canterbury and his wife, Laura Pachuta, Canterbury of Huntington, Tracy Canterbury Meadows of Proctorville, Ohio, and Todd Canterbury and his wife, Kelly Dolan Canterbury of Beckley, West Virginia; grandchildren, Gabrielle Meadows, David Canterbury, Luke Canterbury, Rachel Meadows, Derek Canterbury, Joshua Canterbury, Sarah Canterbury, and Amanda Lester Canterbury; brothers, Jack Worley and his wife, Golfa, of Pratt, and Frank Worley and his wife, Jerry, of Lynchburg, Va.
Funeral services were June 1 at the Daniels Missionary Baptist Church in Daniels, with Dr. Howard Wilburn and Pastor Jack Thomas officiating. Burial followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Joseph Franklin Cavalier
Joseph Franklin “Jay” Cavalier, 71, of Smithers, died May 23, 2010.
Born Sept. 7, 1939, in Smithers, he was the son of Edna Wolfe Cavalier of Smithers and the late Joseph Cavalier.
He was a veteran of the United States Marines and a former police officer in Dallas, Texas. He was a local business owner.
Surviving: children, Kathy Cavalier Maxwell of Proctorville, Ohio, and Kay Cavalier of Glen Ferris; brother, Robert Cavalier of Smithers; grandchildren, Stephanie Maxwell Payne, Paul David Maxwell III and Vinny Cavalier; and great-grandchild, Chloe Payne.
Service was May 27 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.

Drema Stewart
Drema Gay Stewart, 70, of Belva, died May 27, 2010, at Hubbard Hospice House.
Born June 26, 1940, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Duffy and Ida Adkins Stewart. She also was preceded in death by a son, James Lee “Doughboy” Stewart, and a daughter, Sabrina Pauley.
She was a homemaker and attended the Vaughan Baptist Church.
Surviving: daughters and sons-In-law, Susie and David Neal of Bickmore, Lisa and Thomas Clark of Windsor, Va., and Pam and Frank Edmunds of Smithers; son, George Duffy Jones of Smithers; brothers, Calvin Stewart of Swiss, Billy Ray Stewart of Smithers, Roger Stewart of Twenty Mile, Guy Stewart of Clay and James Adkins of Albion, N.Y.; sisters, Virgie Jones of Twenty Mile and Mary Stone of Belva; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was May 30, at the Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Rev. Naaman Moore officiating. Burial followed in the Stewart Cemetery, Cove Hollow.
