Abigale Hope Bennett

Abigale Hope Bennett, 7 months and 26 days, of Oak Hill, died Aug. 27, 2009, at her residence.

Abigale was a New Year’s Day baby, born Jan. 1, 2009, in Beckley; she was the daughter of William Daniel and Tiffany Dawn (Harper) Bennett of Oak Hill.

Abigale was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, William V. Bennett.

Surviving: her Daddy and Mommy, William Daniel Bennett and Tiffany Dawn (Harper) Bennett; a sister, Brianna Sue Ellen Bennett of Oak Hill; a brother, William Michael Bennett of Oak Hill; paternal grandmother, Teresa Ellen McMillion of Scarbro; maternal grandmother, Peggy Sue Adkins and her husband, John R. Adkins, of Pax; maternal grandfather, Carl Estep of Cabin Creek; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Services were Aug. 31 at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carl Underwood officiating. Burial followed in the Goode Family Cemetery, Bud Mountain.

Robert J. ‘Bob’ Damron

Robert J. “Bob” Damron, 79, of Gauley Bridge and Salisbury, N.C., and a former resident of 32 years of Lake, died Aug. 25, 2009.

Born Sept. 6, 1929 at Nolan, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Allie Williams Damron.

He attended First Baptist Church in Rockwell, N.C., and he was retired from the Westmorland Coal Company as health and safety director in Clothier. He was very active in mine rescue.

Surviving: wife, Eva Dorsey Damron; father-in-law, Ralph Dorsey of Gauley Bridge; children, Bobby Damron Jr. and his wife, Vickie, of Middleport, Ohio, Richard Damron and his wife, Sherry, of Hildebran, N.C., Karen Reichenbach and her husband, Craig, of Reidsville, N.C., and Susan Collins and her husband, Shane, of Rockwell; grandchildren, Jennifer, Keith, Shayna, Michael, Eric, Kristin, Makayla, Matthew and Ryan; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Josh; and brother, Paul Wayne Damron and his wife, Monna Kay, of Woodville.

Service was Aug. 29 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. John Bowen officiating. Burial followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow.

Flosie Elizabeth Grasty Lewis

Flosie Elizabeth Grasty Lewis, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, died Aug. 26, 2009, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill.

Born June 11, 1927, in Long Branch, she was the oldest daughter of seven children of the late Malachi and Mary Grasty. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Lewis, on July 2, 1989; daughters, Gloria Mae and Odessa; brothers, Melvin and Wilbert Grasty; sisters, Carpathia Burrow and Roncie Barrett; and a great-granddaughter, Da’Jae Morgan.

For the past 36 years, she was a faithful member of St. John United Holiness Church, Beckley, where she served as the church secretary and treasurer, and a a member of the Ministers and Deacons Union, United Holiness Church, West Virginia District Convocation.

She was an active member of the following organizations: Genealogical Society of Fayette and Raleigh Counties; president, Beards Fork Chapter, West Virginia University Extension Service; member of the board of directors, Fayette County Head Start; Fayette County Quilters Club; member of the board of directors, AARP; vice president of the Harlem Heights Garden Club; Fayette County Community Educational Outreach Service; Breast Cancer Awareness; and member of the board of directors, SELF, Community Action Corporation, Harlem Heights.

Surviving: her sons, Willie Frank of Los Angeles, Calif., Jimmie G. of Huntsville, Ala., and Johnny (Susie) of Oak Hill; daughters, Della Mae Lewis and Arnecia Diann Morgan, both of Oak Hill; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Thelma Grasty and Sandra Grasty, both of Oak Hill; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the First Baptist Church of Harlem Heights, 416 Broadway Ave., Harlem Heights, with Pastor Walter J. Coles, Elder Cleo Moore and Elder Sharon Hughes officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Prosperity.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Clarice Aileen Linkous

Clarice Aileen Linkous, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Aug. 27, 2009.

Clarice was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bittle Linkous.

Surviving: her children, Rebecca Linkous Kees and her husband, Greg, Charles Richard Linkous and his wife, Rebecca, Thomas Wade Linkous and Mark Alan Linkous and his wife, Linda; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Service was Aug. 30 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Fred Coburn officiating. Burial followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow.

Robert Ray Long

Robert Ray Long of Cannelton, formerly of Boomer, died Aug. 24, 2009, at the age of 53.

Also known to many as “Bobby,” he was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting with his special friends, Jeremiah and Anthony. Among the other simple pleasures he enjoyed were family gatherings, gardening and developing his culinary skills.

He was gifted with a wonderful sense of humor and could easily strike up a conversation with friends and strangers alike. He delighted in receiving his special “sloppy kiss” from granddaughter Annika. His memory will always be treasured by those he left behind.

He was preceded in death by his father, James E. “Jim” Long; brother, John W. Long; paternal grandparents, Gilbert N. “Red” and Ethel E. Long; and maternal grandparents, Charles “Mack” and Elsie Childers.

Surviving: mother, Loretta Long of Boomer; wife, Susan Reidler Long; son, Adam Long of Charleston; brother, James E. “Butch” Long and his wife, Debbie, of Maryville, Tenn.; sister, Ginger Smetters and her husband, Steve, of Hilliard, Ohio; stepchildren, Amy Aldridge and his granddaughter, Annika, of Gauley Bridge and Jeff Aldridge and wife Laura of Rock Hill, S.C.

A memorial service was held Aug. 27 with Pastor James Neeson and Rev. Leonard Nichols officiating at Boomer Baptist Church, Boomer.

George Rowe

George Theodore Rowe, 94, of Powellton, died Aug. 27, 2009, in Montgomery General Hospital.

Born May 27, 1915, he was the son of the late Louis and Elizabeth Adkins Rowe. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Rowe, and daughter, Iris Yvonne Arthur.

Mr. Rowe was a retired coal miner and was retired from Long-Airdox in Oak Hill. He was also a member of the UMWA.

Surviving: wife, Jo Ellen; children, Pat White and husband Bill of St. Albans, Mike Rowe and his wife, Brenda, of Montgomery, Frank Rowe and his wife, Cathy, of Dale City, Va., Charles Rowe of Huntington and Melinda Storer and her husband, Greg, of Dale City; stepsons, John, Donald, Bobby and Eddie and his wife, Becky, Young, all of Powellton; sister, Margaret Queen; 28 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Service was Aug. 29 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Greg Hurley officiating. Burial followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow.

Ocie E. Taylor

Ocie E. Taylor, 91, of Pratt, died Aug. 22, 2009.

Born Oct. 1, 1917, at Mahan, , she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward “Jack” Taylor; brothers, Herbert, Frank and Dan O’Brien; and sisters, Lill, Dolly and Catheryn O’Brien.

Mrs. Taylor was a member of the Rebekah’s Evening Rose Lodge #15 of Pratt for over 60 years.

Surviving: brother-in-law, Robert Hudnall of Holly Grove; sister-in-law and her family, Kathleen Robson of Boomer; nephews, Robert Hudnall Jr. and his wife, Cindi, and Leon Hudnall, both of Holly Grove; niece, Rebecca White of Holly Grove; and many other nieces and nephews.

Service was Aug. 26 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery. Burial followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow.
