Lloyd A. Clark



Lloyd A. Clark, 74, of Kanawha Falls, died Sept. 2, 2005, at Montgomery General Hospital following a short illness.

Born Jan. 11, 1931, at Glen Ferris, he was the son of the late Harry B. and Celia Bibbee Clark. He also was preceded in death by his sisters, Catherine Clark, Lucille Norford, Elizabeth Martin, Dorotha Kinser, Mildred Propps, and Carolyn Benda; and brothers, Edward, Charles, and Arthur Ray Clark.

Mr. Clark was a retired employee from Grief Brothers Corp. at Alloy, and Caldwell, Ohio. He was an Army veteran.

Surviving: his wife, Mary Ann Baker Clark; sisters, Hazel Webb of Flatwoods, Ky., Imogene Jones of Booneville, N.C., and Sue Kirby of Kanawha Falls; brothers, Harry B. Clark Jr. and Franklin Clark, both of Kanawha Falls.

Funeral service was Sept. 6 at Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge, with Pastor Kim Kirby officiating. Interment was in Montgomery Memorial Park, London. Military graveside services were conducted by the Gauley Bridge VFW Post No. 8366.

Bert Royce Cummings



Bert Royce Cummings, 81, of Fayetteville, died at his home Aug. 28, 2005, following a long illness.

Born Feb. 19, 1924, at Bernie, he was the son of the late Roy Cummings and Annie Angle Cummings. He also was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. He was the last member of a family of 11.

Mr. Cummings was a retired mine foreman and a World War II Army veteran. He served in Europe during World War II, earning six battle stars, four while serving on special assignment with the 101st Airborne. He also won the Bronze Arrowhead-Glider Wings, and the presidential unit citation. His service included Normandy Airborne Invasion of Holland and Bastogne during the “Battle of the Bulge” and he received his honorable discharge Nov. 2, 1945.

After military service, he played organized baseball from 1948-1950. Later in life he participated in bowling, capturing the Oak Hill Bowling Association Single Handicap Championship in 1979, and continued winning several team titles over the years.

Surviving: his loving and devoted wife, Joyce Jean Roberts Cummings of Fayetteville; daughters, Barbara J. Halstenberg and her husband, Bill, of Fayetteville, Deborah L. Smith and her husband, Garrell, of Beckley, Jennifer Jean Sorrell and her husband, Okey, of Hico, and Theresa K. Cummings of Fayetteville; sons, Danny Dale Cummings of Culpeper, Va., and Randy Darrell Cummings and his wife, Bernadine, of Fayetteville; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held in Lincoln County at his home place at a later date. His request to be cremated will be honored by his family.

Jeanette Farthing Hendrickson



Jeanette Farthing Hendrickson, 81, of Montgomery, died Sept. 2, 2005.

Born Nov. 27, 1923, in Beckley, she was the first child of the late Walter P. and Ruth Underwood Farthing. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Edmond T. Hendrickson, whom she married in Montgomery on Oct. 18, 1944; a brother, Virgil R. Farthing; and a sister, Quindora Childers.

Mrs. Hendrickson was a graduate of Montgomery High School, Class of 1941, and a member of Montgomery Baptist Church, where she was active in the American Baptist Women’s Ministries.

Surviving: son, Robert D. (Jane) Hendrickson of Circleville, Ohio; son, Michael J. Hendrickson of Tacoma, Wash.; daughter, Ruth Ann Hendrickson of Columbus, Ohio; grandson, Robert L. Hendrickson (Cynthia Longworth) of Tiffin, Ohio; granddaughter, Rebecca J. Hendrickson (Brian White) of Hilliard, Ohio; sisters, Winnie Mae (Gene) Deck of Crab Orchard, Helen (O.V.) Lilly of Goldsboro, N.C., and Rosemary Farthing of Ashland, Ky.; brothers, William W. (Anna) of Ocala, Fla., and Woodrow N. (Mary) of Johns Island, S.C.; sister-in-law, Phyllis Farthing of Johns Island, S.C.; and many nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.

Jean will be remembered for her strong Christian faith and her devotion to living her ministry, exemplified by the more than 12 years she dedicated as a volunteer at Montgomery General Elderly Care. She had an extraordinary ability to make any plant grow. She also will be remembered as a friend to all living creatures, particularly the many dogs and cats that benefited from her compassion and generosity.

Contributions may be made in Jean's honor to Montgomery Baptist Church, American Baptist Women's Ministries Love Gift. The Hendrickson family would like to thank the entire staff of Montgomery General Elderly Care for the exceptional caring support they provided for Jean.

The body was donated to WVU Medical Center.

Helen Virginia Callison Hudson



Helen Virginia Callison Hudson, 87, of Fayetteville, died at home Aug. 22, 2005, following a long illness.

Born March 29, 1918, in Ravens Eye, she was the daughter of the late Myrth B. Callison and Stella Emma Amick Callison.

Helen was a homemaker and a former employee of the West Virginia University Extension Service in Fayetteville under the Green Thumb program for older workers. She was an avid seamstress and gardener most of her life.

On March 11, 1938, she married William David “W.D.” Hudson, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 1969. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Fenton Ashmer Callison, Frantz Boone Callison and George Henry Callison; and two sisters, Wilma Ilene Foster and Gladys Agnes Brown.

Surviving: her three children, William David Hudson III or Ormond Beach, Fla., Roger Fredric Hudson of Fayetteville and Patricia Louise Crabill of Palm Coast, Fla.; sisters, Elizabeth Catherine Skaggs of Oak Hill, Mary Lou Maroney of Charleston and Martha Ann Thornton of Beckley; grandchildren, Jennifer Lea Hudson, Stephanie Dawn Hudson, David Louise Crabill, Charles Fredric Crabill, Joseph Milton Crabill, Jessica Leigh Hudson Parker, Zachary Adam Hudson, Laura Jane Hudson and Lisa Kate Hudson; and a great-grandchild, Sydney Rae Parker.

Memorial service was held Aug. 27 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Ron George Jr. officiating. Mrs. Hudson had requested her body be donated to the Human Gift Registry of West Virginia University, Morgantown.

Bessie Lucas, 82, of Belva, died Sept. 3, 2005, at the home of her daughter in Walkersville, Md.

Emily J. Mahood



Emily Jane Cremens Mahood, 49, of Fayetteville, died Aug. 24, 2005, at home, following a long illness.

Born March 8, 1956, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Jack Cremens and Hildreth Bruce Cremens. Also preceding her in death: a brother, Anthony Cremens; and a sister, Suzann Cremens.

Emily was a 1974 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and graduated from Marshall University. She was a counselor for FMRS Mental Health Council, Beckley, with 23 years’ service. She enjoyed crafting fine jewelry and working on stained glass.

She was the founder of SMD.

Suriviving: husband, Charles M. Mahood.

A memorial service, with arrangements by Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was held Aug. 28 at the Fayetteville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joan Shirey Stewart officiating.

Deborah Hartwell White



Deborah “Debbie” Hartwell White, 46, of Montgomery, died Aug. 31, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born June 25, 1958, in Montgomery, she was the daughter of Betty Cotton Street of Smithers and the late Kenneth Hartwell. She also was preceded in death by her grandmother, Louise Cotton; her brother, Ricky Cotton; one son and one daughter.

Mrs. White was a lifelong resident of Fayette County.

She was employed at CAMC Memorial Hospital in housekeeping.

Surviving, in addition to her mother: her husband, Willie White; daughter and her husband, Jennifer and Tim Withrow of Montgomery; sister and her husband, Patty and Richard Burford of Gauley Bridge; grandchildren, Brandon, Haley and Kirsten; nephew and his wife, Christopher and Holli Burford of Ansted; and a niece, Melissa Burford of Gauley Bridge.

Service was Sept. 3 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with the Rev. Claude R. Miller officiating. Burial followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.

Arthur Dalton Winter, 91, of Belle died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
