Horace Angel



Horace M. Angel, 84, of Boomer, died July 1, at Montgomery General Hospital.

Born Dec. 18, 1921, in Ravenscroft, Tenn., he was the son of the late Joe and Callie Milligan Angel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Haggard, Robert, Clyde, Comer, and J.C.; grandson, William (Billy) Giacomo; and brother-in-law, Marvin Feicke.

Mr. Angel was a retired miner of 45 years from Peabody Coal Company at Harewood, and a member of UMWA and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He also was a member of Carbondale Baptist Church.

Surviving: his wife of 63 years, Mary; daughter, Nancy and her husband, William Giacomo, of Boomer, and Linda and her husband, Frank Carelli, of Conroe, Texas; sons, Sam and his wife, Tracey, of North Augusta, S.C., James of Belva, and Jeffrey and his wife, Laura, of Fayetteville; brothers, Sam of Mount Carbon, and Richard of Smithers; sisters, Dorothy Hamlin of Columbus, Ohio, and Ruth Feicke of Boomer; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Service was July 5 at Carbondale Baptist Church at Cannelton with Rev. Ron Eagle officiating. Entombment with military honors presented by Post #8366 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Gauley Bridge followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow.

Robert H. Bess II



Robert H. “Robby” Bess II, 43, of Cedar Grove, died July 4, 2006, at home.

Rev. Ruby Madilene Bowe



The Rev. Ruby Madilene Bowe of Glasgow died July 7, 2006.

Born March 27, 1927, in Cedar Grove, she was the daughter of the late Harrison and Trixie Withrow Smith.

Rev. Bowe pastored the Turkey Creek Church of God for several years and also pastored Carlyle Church of God. She was an evangelist for about 30 years and led many souls to the Lord and she also assisted her husband, the Rev. Alfred J. Bowe, in several churches.

Surviving: her husband, the Rev. Alfred J. Bowe; her son and his wife, Darrell and Joyce Bowe of Kanawha City; a daughter and her husband, Debra and Allen Reid of Hugheston; sisters, Seda Jo Canterbury of Cedar Grove and Lorraine Hudnall and her husband, Jake, of Ward; granddaughters, Tara Sizemore and her husband, Chuck, of Cannelton, Christi Bowe of Nitro, Michelle Gilbert and her husband, Rob, of Henderson, Teia Patton and her husband, Bill, of Riverside, and Whitney Reid and her fiancé, John Haymaker, of East Bank; and eight great-grandchildren.

The service was July 10 at the Lincoln Memorial Chapel of Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow with the Rev. J.B. Lee officiating. Entombment followed in the memorial gardens.

Emelia ‘Madeline’ Scalise



Emelia “Madeline” Scalise, 85, of Smithers, died June 13, 2006, in Montgomery General Hospital.

Born June 9, 1921, in Watson, she was the daughter of the late Dominick and Catherine Urso Lopez. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John Scalise; her son, Sammy Scalise; and a grandson, Frank Scalise Jr.

Mrs. Scalise was a member of St. Anthony’s Shrine Catholic Church in Boomer and she was a member of St. Theresa’s Society.

Surviving: children, Frank Scalise and his wife, Linda, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Madeline Gay and her husband, Ray, of Roanoke, Va., John Scalise Jr. of Agawam, Mass., and Donald Scalise of Smithers; a daughter-in-law, Deborah Scalise of Winchester, Va.; grandchildren, Matthew Scalise, Rachael Scalise, George Ponthieux, Jennifer Parcell, Raymond Gay Jr., Andrea Gay, John Scalise III, Talia Scalise, Donald Scalise Jr. and Daniel Scalise; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial was June 17 at St. Anthony’s Shrine Catholic Church in Boomer with Fr. Paul Wharton as celebrant. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Joann Estep Sharp



Joann Estep Sharp, 49, of Rosedale, died July 3, 2006, at her home.

Born March 17, 1957, at Charleston, she was the daughter of Gertrude Hobbs Estep of East Bank, and the late Willis Estep. She also was preceded in death by sisters, Wanda Estep Kennedy and Drema Estep; and a brother, Roy Estep.

Mrs. Sharp was a homemaker

Surviving, in addition to her mother: husband, Lawrence David Sharp; son, Lawrence D. Sharp Jr. of Rosedale; daughter, Wanda Ann Sharp of Fayette County; brothers, Theodore Estep of Rand, Tommy Estep of Shrewsbury, and William Estep of Witcher Creek; sister, August Pauley of East Bank; and grandchildren, Jasmin Rena Sharp, Christopher H. Carter and Dylan Isaac Sharp.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Friday, July 7, 2006, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

Services were July 7 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Malina Adkins officiating. Burial was at Nichols Hollow Cemetery, Robson.
