William S. Hazelwood
William S. Hazelwood, 82, of Hansford, died Dec. 25, 2009, at home.
Born Oct. 26, 1927, at Deepwater, he was the son of the late Charles Edward and Margaret Ann Jarrett Hazelwood. He also was preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia Hazelwood, Louise Philpott and Mildred McClure; and a brother, Charles Hazelwood.
Mr. Hazelwood was a 1946 graduate of Montgomery High School and a graduate of West Virginia Tech. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and had retired from C&O; Railroad.
He was also a member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Montgomery where he had served on the Vestry and had served as secretary-treasurer and as a trustee.
He was initiated on Sept. 7, 1962, into the Gauley Bridge Lodge #64 AF & AM. He served as Master of his lodge during the years 1967, 1989 and 1990. He was a member of two York Rite bodies, these being the Royal Arch Masons and the Commandery and he also served as the High Priest of Montgomery Chapter #47 of Royal Arch Masons for six years and also served several years as its secretary. William served in several positions in the Grand Lodge of West Virginia. He served one year as Deputy Grand Master of the Eight Masonic District, and one year as Junior Grand Deacon. He was appointed Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Victoria near the Grand Lodge of West Virginia from the date of his appointment until his death. His work in Masonry was of the highest caliber. He put all his heart into it with a cheerful disposition and was always ready to help others in time of need.
Surviving: wife, Mildred Miller Hazelwood; children, Kiena Smith and her husband, R. Phillip Shimer, of Charleston and Leslie D. Smith of Charles Town; grandchildren, Joshua L. Smith-Shimer and Sarah Margaret Smith-Shimer; sister-in-law, Sue M. Martin of Hansford and her children, Michael Martin and Andrea Craven; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was Dec. 29 at Calvary Episcopal Church in Montgomery with Fr. Stan Holmes officiating. Burial with Masonic rites presented by Gauley Bridge Lodge #64 followed in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.

Lonnie C. Keller
Lonnie C. Keller, 68, of Fayette Heights, died Dec. 22, 2009, at his home.
Born June 15, 1941, at Handley, he was the son of the late Spencer and Amanda Eggers Keller. He also was preceded in death by a son, Brett Allen Keller, in 1966; a brother, William Keller; and a sister, Helen Stafford.
Mr. Keller was a machinist for coal and other industries and was a member of the International Association of Mechanists.
Surviving: son, Jerry Keller and wife Sheila of Daniels; daughter, Delores Boyd of Chesapeake; his former wife, Linda Keller of Tennessee; former son-in-law, Curtis Boyd Jr. of Kimberly; sisters, Shirley McClure and husband Larry of East Bank and Dottie Tuffs of East Bank; and grandchildren, Jonathan Charles Keller, Tasha Boyd and James “J.D.” Boyd.
Mr. Keller was cremated. There will be no visitation or service.

Virginia K. Petry
Virginia K. Petry, 93, of Swiss, died Dec. 23, 2009, at CAMC Memorial Division.
Born Nov. 25, 1916, in Prince, she was the daughter of the late John Kenna and Lula Schoolcraft Willard.
Mrs. Petry was a member of the Swiss Missionary Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, James H. and Debra Petry of Birmingham, Ala.; daughter, Judith K. Grimmett of Swiss; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was Dec. 28 at the Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Minister Dennis Preast officiating. Burial followed in the Montgomery Memorial Park. London.

Harry Edward Spinks Jr.
Harry Edward Spinks Jr., of Chestnut Knob Road, Layland, died Dec. 24, 2009, at his home, following a long illness.
Born April 11, 1920, at Belle, he was the son of the late Harry Edward Spinks Sr. and Sallie Jane Burdette Spinks. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Frankie Carter, in 1995; two infant sisters; and a brother, Basil Spinks.
Mr. Spinks was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served during World War II and the Korean War.
Harry was a retired inspector for TRW, Inc., and was a member of Aircraft Workers Alliance, and the United Auto Workers Local #2400.
Surviving: daughter, Connie Rogers of Jonesville, N.C.; son: Kenneth Spinks of Cleveland, Ohio; brother, Bernard Spinks of Sunbury, Ohio; and grandchildren, Tiffany, Taylor, Kelleen, and Marissa.
Services were Dec. 29 at Chestnut Knob Baptist Church with Rev. Floyd Bolen officiating. Burial followed at Layland Cemetery, Layland.

Bernice E. Waugh
Bernice E. Waugh, 84, of Gauley Bridge, died Dec. 25, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.
Born Feb. 23, 1925, in Gauley Bridge, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Mary E. Backus Bailey. She also was preceded in death by her husbands, Estel Hamilton and Guy H. Waugh, and son, Larry K. Waugh.
Mrs. Waugh was a member of the Gauley Bridge Baptist Church where she sang in the church choir. She was also a former member of the Ida Baptist Church and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxillary.
Surviving: sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Shirley Kincaid of Gauley Bridge,Trent Waugh of Falls View, and Ron and Nadine Hamilton of Lizemores; daughters and sons-in-law, Keva Hamilton of Cross Lanes, Sue Greathouse of Cleveland, Ohio, Kay Murawski of Parma, Ohio, and Kathy and Lloyd Arbogast of Buckeye; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two God-daughters, Katie Arbogast and Sarajha Davis.
Funeral service was Dec. 29 at the Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Minister Dennis Preast officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.
