Iona Mae Reed Bird

Iona Mae Reed Bird, 75, of Gauley Bridge, died Jan. 1, 2010, at Montgomery General Extended Care Unit.

Born March 3, 1934, in Putnam County, she was the daughter of the late George and Hazel Davis Reed. She also was preceded in death by her sons, Steven Keith, on Dec. 30, 2009, Paul Lee and Michael David.

Mrs. Bird was a homemaker.

Surviving: her husband, Junior Lee Bird of Gauley Bridge; son, Mark Nathan Bird of Orgas; brother, Paul Reed of Sandston, Va.; 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A joint funeral service with her son was held Jan. 4 at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Ministers Billy E. Morris, Lee Holliday, and Charles Blankenship officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Steven Bird

Steven Keith Bird, 57, of Kimberly, died Dec. 30, 2009, at home.

Born June 25, 1952, in Gauley Bridge, he was a retired coal miner from Peabody Coal Company.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Paul and Michael Bird of Gauley Bridge. His mother, Iona Bird, followed him in death on Jan. 1, 2010.

Surviving: his father, Junior Bird of Gauley Bridge; wife, Sherry McCallister Bird of Kimberly; daughter, Jessica Bird Richards of San Diego, Calif.; sons, Jeremy Lee Bird of St. Albans, and Steven Michael Bird, his wife, Teresa Dawn, and their children, Emily Dawn and Niedra Lynn of Cannelton; and brother, Mark Bird of Orgas.

A joint funeral service with his mother was held Jan. 4 at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Ministers Billy E. Morris, Lee Holliday and Charles Blankenship officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Kenneth Ray Carson

Kenneth Ray Carson, 74, of Gauley Bridge, died Dec. 20, 2009, at home.

Born Aug. 31, 1935, in Gauley Bridge, he was a son of the late James Franklin and Carol Viola Kincaid Carson. He also was preceded in death by his brother, James Carrol Carson.

Mr. Carson was a retired teacher, principal, associate superintendent and superintendent for Fayette County schools with more than 44 years of service. He was the president of the Association of Business Leaders of America and served on the board of directors.

He was a member and deacon of Gauley Bridge Baptist Church, a member of the Gauley Bridge Masonic Lodge 64 AF&AM;, and a former member of the Gauley Bridge Lions Club.

Surviving: his wife, Janet Ramsey Carson of Gauley Bridge; daughter and son-in-law, Susan Lynn and Royal L. Casto Jr.; sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Jerry Atkins of Charlton Heights; grandson, Tyler Clay; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Dec. 26 at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Minister Craig Gee officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Lewis ‘Ed’ Edward Hall

Lewis “Ed” Edward Hall, 85, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 27, 2009, at his home.

Born May 31, 1924, at Burnwell, he was the son of the late Fred and Effie Kitchen Hall. A son, Ronnie Edward Hall; brothers, Ernest Hall, Howard Hall and Carl Hall; and sisters, Eloise Wade, Freida Epoch and Thelma Epling, also preceded him in death.

Ed was a retired coal miner, having worked for Imperial Colliery at Burnwell.

He was a member of the UMWA and World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving: his wife, Emmelene Holdren Hall; son, Michael Hall of Oak Hill; daughters, Paula Blevins of Oak Hill and Barbara Smith of Charles Town; sister, Gwendolyn Kees of Oak Hill; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were Dec. 30 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Ralph Shupe officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Lonnie C. Keller

Lonnie C. Keller, 68, of Fayette Heights, died Dec. 22, 2009, at his home.

Born June 15, 1941, at Handley, he was the son of the late Spencer and Amanda Eggers Keller. He also was preceded in death by a son, Brett Allen Keller, in 1966; a brother, William Keller; and a sister, Helen Stafford.

Mr. Keller was a machinist for coal and other industries and was a member of the International Association of Mechanists.

Surviving: son, Jerry Keller and wife Sheila of Daniels; daughter, Delores Boyd of Chesapeake; his former wife, Linda Keller of Tennessee; former son-in-law, Curtis Boyd Jr. of Kimberly; sisters, Shirley McClure and husband Larry of East Bank and Dottie Tuffs of East Bank; and grandchildren, Jonathan Charles Keller, Tasha Boyd and James “J.D.” Boyd.

Mr. Keller was cremated. There will be no visitation or service.

Robert William Kirby Jr.

Robert William “Bob” Kirby Jr. of Charlton Heights died Dec.19, 2009, at Montgomery General Hospital following a short illness. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Bob was born in East Gulf to the late Robert W. and Marie Edna Bowman Kirby. He also was preceded in death by sisters, Bette Kincaid and Irene Brown.

Bob entered the military service as a young 18-year-old during World War II. He was recognized for his outstanding courage and gallantry in action by being awarded the Bronze Star, as well as the Silver Star. He was commissioned on the battlefield as a Second Lieutenant for valor in the European Theater.

He began his mining experience at the Harewood Mine of Allied Chemical Corporation, Semet-Solvay Division. He was the assistant superintendent of Semet-Solvay. He joined Hawks Nest Mining Company at Eagle and served as vice president of mining operations. He was also employed by Esmer and Associates at Boomer.

He attended Falls View Presbyterian Church.

Surviving: his wife of 64 years, the former Janice Faye Ratliff; a daughter, Donna Jean Shabdue and son-in-law, Douglas; granddaughter, Robyn Shabdue Allen and her husband, Franklin “Scott” Allen; great-granddaughters, Jenna LeRaye and Jadyn Victoria Allen, all of Adena Village; sisters, Phyllis Hanna of Waynesboro, Va., and Sarah Lou Harris of Virginia Beach, Va.; eight nieces; and a nephew.

His body was entrusted to O'Dell Funeral Home in Montgomery.

Service was Dec. 22 at Montgomery Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joan Stewart conducting. He was laid to rest at Montgomery Memorial Park, London, immediately following the service.

Radie Price

Radie Price, 93, of Newport, N.C., died Dec. 23, 2009, at Carolina East Medical Center.

Surviving: a son and his wife, Jack and Nicky Price of Morehead City, N.C.; daughter, Joyce Kerere of Emerald Isle, N.C.; sisters, Emogene Boothe of Pennsylvania, Mildred O’Dell and Josephine Humphrey, both of West Virginia, and Mazie Markle of Michigan; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin F. and Elsie G. Keith Foster; and her husband, Everett Edward Price.

Service was Dec. 30 in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

William David Sesler

William David Sesler, 67, of Smithers, died Dec. 30, 2009, after an extended illness.

Born May 18, 1942, he was the son of Francis Carr Hughes.

He is a member of the Montgomery Baptist Church and he was an U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving, in addition to his mother: three sons, one daughter and seven grandchildren.

Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. C.J. Rider officiating.

Harry Edward Spinks Jr.

Harry Edward Spinks Jr., of Chestnut Knob Road, Layland, died Dec. 24, 2009, at his home, following a long illness.

Born April 11, 1920, at Belle, he was the son of the late Harry Edward Spinks Sr. and Sallie Jane Burdette Spinks. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Frankie Carter, in 1995; two infant sisters; and a brother, Basil Spinks.

Mr. Spinks was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served during World War II and the Korean War.

Harry was a retired inspector for TRW, Inc., and was a member of Aircraft Workers Alliance, and the United Auto Workers Local #2400.

Surviving: daughter, Connie Rogers of Jonesville, N.C.; son: Kenneth Spinks of Cleveland, Ohio; brother, Bernard Spinks of Sunbury, Ohio; and grandchildren, Tiffany, Taylor, Kelleen, and Marissa.

Services were Dec. 29 at Chestnut Knob Baptist Church with Rev. Floyd Bolen officiating. Burial followed at Layland Cemetery, Layland.

Elsie Kate (Yeary) Stevens

Elsie Kate (Yeary) Stevens, 73, of Eccles, died Dec. 30, 2009, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born Feb. 24, 1936, at Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Earnest and Mary Yeary. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, James, Junior, and Dewitt.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Surviving: her loving husband of 56 years, Frank Stevens; children, Debbie (Byron) Large of Wise, Va., Bonnie Synuria of Ravenna, Ohio, Frankie (Mary Kay) Stevens of Edinburg, Ohio, and Janice (Brad) Fusselman of Ravenna, Ohio; brothers, Charles and Eugene Yeary of Ravenna, Ohio; sisters, Lavada Williams of Ravenna, Ohio, Wanda Wingrove of Mabscott, and Betty Vilotte of Hopewell, Va.; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.

Services were Jan. 2 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Jimmy Leach officiating. Following the services, Elsie was laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Madeline M. Walker

Madeline M. “Madge” Walker, 80, of Powellton, died Jan. 1, 2010, at home.

Born Dec. 18, 1929, at Harrison, Clay County, she was the last surviving child of the late Albert and Myrtle Hannah Nelson. She also was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles Walker; her sisters, Maysel Parker, Mabel Hypes and Anna Mae Loving; and her brothers, Jink, Jerd, Jennings, Holly, Chester and Lester Nelson.

Madge was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and she will be so sadly missed.

Surviving: her children, Brenda Neil and her husband, Dayton, of Pratt, Ronald Walker and his wife, Robin, of Boomer, and Lisa Nuttall of Belle; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Service was Jan. 4 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Greg Frances officiating. Burial followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow.
