Tom Cole
Tom Cole, 92, of Gauley Bridge, died Aug. 30, 2010, at CAMC-General Division.
Born Feb. 27, 1918, in Gauley Bridge, he was the son of the late Walter Alexander and Anne Belle Taylor Cole. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Cole; son, Kenneth Tolliver; brothers, John and Earl Cole; and sisters, Grace Cole, Bonnie Stull, Maycle MacKibben, Ruby Roop and Esta Mae Cole.
He was a coal miner, having worked for Gamoca, Gauley Mountain, Semet-Solvay Harewood Mine, and worked on the Hawks Nest Tunnel. He was a member of the UMWA.
Surviving: his sons and daughters, Thomas Wayne Cole (Josie) of Belva, Bill Tolliver (Vuila) of Gauley Bridge, Sandra Cole Niday of Dunbar and Ann Blankenship of Gauley Bridge; brothers, Walter Cole of Gauley Bridge, and Sonny Cole of St. Albans; sister, Reba McClain of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was Sept. 2 at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Minister Dennis Preast officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Charles Allen ‘Charlie’ Durrett
Charles Allen “Charlie” Durrett, 59, formerly of Fayetteville, died Aug. 30, 2010, at Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley.
Born June 26, 1951, in Montgomery, he was the son of the late William Thomas “Bill” Durrett and Roberta Pauline Arbaugh Durrett.
Mr. Durrett taught physical education at Daniels Elementary from 1977-1989. He taught driver’s education and coached girls’ softball at Woodrow Wilson High School from 1989-2008 where he was instrumental in developing the girls’ softball complex.
Surviving: his wife, Robin Basman Durrett of Beckley; daughters, Sarah Durrett of Beckley, and Rebecca Cottle-Makhene and husband Moe of Manassas, Va., and their children, Drew and Eli; son, Paul Cottle and wife Megan Turnock, of British Columbia, Canada; brothers, William Thomas “Tom” Durrett and wife Loretta of St. Albans, and Gary Evans Durrett and wife Van of The Villages, Fla.; sisters, Elizabeth Ellen “Betsy” Turner and husband Bruce of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Roberta Ann “Anne” Carte and husband Andy of Fayetteville; nieces and nephews, Stephen Durrett, Mark Durrett, Denise Matthews and Doug Turner; and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services were Sept. 1 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Jackie Pittman officiating. Burial followed in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

April Nadine McAllister
April Nadine McAllister, 97, died in her sleep on Sept. 1, 2010, in Virginia Beach, Va.
A native of Belva and Alta, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Fannie Humphreys, and the widow of Thomas Marshall McAllister of Lookout. She also was preceded in death by a grandson, Bradley Ruff; brothers, Arnold, Olaf, and Jim Humphreys; and sister, Helen Clonch of Gauley Bridge.
She graduated Gauley Bridge High School in 1929 and went on to earn an associate’s degree from New River State College (WVUIT) in Montgomery in 1932. She worked for Dr. Ronald Atkins, the dentist in Gauley Bridge, and met her husband when cashing her paycheck at the old Kroger Store next door where he was the manager at the time.
She and her husband lived in Gauley Bridge, Cabin Creek, and Dunbar. They later moved to Drexel Hill, Pa., and Cape May, N.J. Her husband passed away Sept. 7, 1996, in Cape May and she moved to a retirement home in Virginia several years ago.
Surviving: her two daughters, Betty Ruff and husband Al of Pawleys Island, S.C., and Brenda Phillips and husband Dennis of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandsons, Bart Ruff of Lederach, Pa., and Cape May, Chad Phillips of Virginia Beach, Bryan Ruff of St. Petersburg, Fla., Nathan Phillips of Alexandria, Va., and Adam Phillips of Virginia Beach; great-grandchildren, Jacob Phillips, Zachary Phillips, Clayton Ruff and Cameron Ruff; and niece and nephews, Ann Naylor, Huey Clonch and Dale Clonch.
A funeral service was conducted on Sept. 3 in Virginia Beach. Burial was Sept. 7 at Valley Forge Memorial Gardens in King of Prussia, Pa.

Katherine Isner Nutter
Katherine Isner Nutter, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, of Genesis Health Care Center in Oak Hill, formerly of Belle, died Aug. 26, 2010.
Katherine, or Katie as she was affectionately known, was born at Elkins on Oct. 2, 1913, the daughter of the late Clarence Isner and Ida Ora Coberly Isner. She also was preceded her in death by her loving husband, Ralph Edwin Nutter Sr.; her loving son, Ralph Edwin Nutter Jr.; and her only sibling, Rosemary Isner Philbrick Johnson.
She was a graduate of Davis and Elkins College, a member of Eastern Star and a longtime member of Judson Baptist Church in Belle. She worked at Charleston General Hospital, Dr. Anderson’s office, and retired from the West Virginia D.O.T. Materials and Soil Testing Division as office manager.
Surviving: her only daughter, Dianne Nutter Muncy and her husband, Tom ,of Oak Hill; her grandchildren, Terra Muncy of Belle, Katherine “Kathy” Scott and her husband, Brant, of Pataskala, Ohio, Dr. Thomas L. “Todd” Muncy II, D.C., and his wife, Beth, of Bristol, Tenn., and Melissa “Missy” Triplett and her husband, David, of Columbus, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Katie Beth King and her husband, Brandon, of Great Falls, Mont., Ethan Chase and Ryan Marcus Muncy of Bristol, Tenn., and Dylann Marie Triplett of Columbus, Ohio; special friend, Angela Adkins of Belle; and her special nephew, Kendl Philbrick and his wife, Cynthia, of Williamsburg, Va.
Funeral services were Aug. 30 at Fidler and Frame Funeral Home in Belle, with the Rev. David White and Rev. David Sneed officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.

Carlton Revere Spicer Jr.
Carlton Revere Spicer Jr., 65, died Sept. 2, 2010, at his home in Fredericksburg, Va., following an extended illness.
Mr. Spicer was born Oct. 23, 1944, in Gauley Bridge, the son of the late Carlton and Grace Spicer. He also was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Kania and Doris Waldeck; his brother, James Spicer; and his niece, Jennifer Vincent.
Mr. Spicer worked as an educator for 40 years.
He graduated from Gauley Bridge High School, Glenville State College, and was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He earned his master’s degree in Education Administration from West Virginia University. He taught business, coached high school basketball, and served as a school principal in Fayette County. He also served as a school administrator at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley. Carlton served as a facilitator with the North Central Accreditation Commission for the WV State Board of Education.
After moving to Fredericksburg, Va., in 2000, Mr. Spicer served as a high school administrator at Chancellor High School and Riverbend High School in Spotsylvania County. He retired in 2007. During his retirement years he enjoyed working at Macy’s.
Carlton was a Christian who loved God and considered his family his greatest blessing. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Fredericksburg.
Carlton was an avid sports fan. He excelled in track and basketball, having played in high school and college. His ability to run and score earned him multiple awards. He was also an accomplished drummer, earning all-state recognition in high school.
Surviving: his loving wife, Rebekah; children, Johna Rutledge, Grace Synan and her husband, Clay, and Carlton Revere “Chip” Spicer III; grandchildren, Jordyn, Judson, Jaren, and Brooks; siblings, JoAnn Vincent, Marita Reed and her husband, Tom, and Steve Spicer and his wife, Carole; brothers in-law, Joe Kania and Bill Waldeck; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
According to his wishes, his body will be donated for research and organ recovery to the University of Maryland Anatomical Registry.
The family received visitors at their home on Sept. 7. A memorial service in his honor will be held at a later date.
