Tom Chambers

Tom Chambers, 87, of Oak Hill, died June 26, 2010, in the Beckley VA Medical Center.

Born Aug. 21, 1922, in Daniels, he was the son of the late Charles and Lelia Burdette Chambers. He also was preceded in death by wife, Doris Lee Aliff Chambers; daughter, Deborah Chambers; and grandson, Michael Dodd.

Mr. Chambers proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II during which he received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a 50-year-plus member of the LaFayette American Legion Post 149, Fayetteville.

He continued to serve the country he loved as an honor guard team member with the Oak Hill VFW Post 3110 where he participated in hundreds of funerals with military rites for former and active military soldiers.

He was a retired furnace tapper with Elkem Metals, Alloy.

Mr. Chambers was an avid fan of all sports, especially WVU and the Cincinnati Reds.

Surviving: his daughters, Terri Dodd and husband Reggie, and Tammi Chambers; and grandsons, Greg Dodd and wife Jackie, and Scott Chambers, all of Oak Hill.

Funeral services were June 30 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville. Burial followed at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with military rites by American Legion Post 149, Fayetteville.

Julian George Settle

Julian George Settle, 83, of Lansing, died July 1, 2010, at home.

Born Feb. 8, 1927, in Lansing, he was the son of the late Charlie L. and Celia Jane Atkinson Settle. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Settle, in 1993; brother, Edward Dupuy Marty, in 2006; and great-grandson, Brian Edward Marty in 2007.

Mr. Settle served his country proudly in the U.S. Army Infantry.

He retired from Elkem Metals, Alloy, on Dec. 31, 1986. 

Surviving: his daughters, Tammy Workman and her husband, John, of Lansing, and Crystal Settle Kerwood and husband Jeff of Oak Hill; son, Julian George Settle Jr. of High Point, N.C., and Julian George Settle III of Lansing; and brother, Shirley Settle of Ohio.

In keeping with Mr. Settle’s wishes, private graveside services were held on July 3. He was buried beside his beloved wife, Mary.
