Phillip Tottum Brown

Phillip Tottum Brown, 95, of Canton, Ohio, formerly of Lizemores, died Aug. 22, 2010, at Oakhill Manor Care Center in Louisville, Ohio.

Born July 5, 1915, in Lizemores, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Clyda Stone Brown.

He was a heavy equipment mechanic.

Surviving: half-sister, Jenny Facemire of Charleston; sons, Donald R. Brown of Canton, Ohio, Arthur “Bud” (Kack) Brown of Lizemores and Phillip of Clay; daughters, Nancy Joanne Elliott of Louisville, Ohio, Lucy Yvonne Spencer of Burnsville, Schawana of Charleston and Phyllis of Elkview; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was Aug. 28 at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Minister Albert “Boo” Mullins officiating. Burial followed in the Stone-Coleman Cemetery, Lizemores.

Etta Catherine O’Dell Huffman

Etta Catherine O’Dell Huffman, 87, of Boomer, died Aug. 27, 2010, after a long illness.

Born in Nicholas County on Dec. 1, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Elza and Lena Dorsey O’Dell. Her brother, Haley, also preceded her in death.

Etta was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had always been an active member of the Methodist Church and in recent years she attended Glasgow United Methodist Church.

Surviving: her husband of 69 years, Caleb Berton Huffman, who was her devoted caregiver; her daughters, Charlotte Martin and her husband, Jerry, of Mt. Nebo, and Betty Jo Garten and her husband, Stanley, of Mt. Carbon; grandchildren, Deborah and Chuck Hill of Mt. Nebo, Angela and Matt Tackett of Boomer, Chris and Katie Garten of Glasgow and Amanda Garten of Mt. Carbon; loving great-grandchildren, Kristin, Jordan, Zach, Austin, Jacob, Justin, and Wesley Hill, Mara Lewis, Becca and Samantha Tackett and Gavin Garden; and a foster sister, Helen Robertson of Staunton, Va.

Service was Aug. 30 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. John Massey officiating. Entombment followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow.

Katherine Isner Nutter

Katherine Isner Nutter, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, of Genesis Health Care Center in Oak Hill, formerly of Belle, died Aug. 26, 2010.

Katherine, or Katie as she was affectionately known, was born at Elkins on Oct. 2, 1913, the daughter of the late Clarence Isner and Ida Ora Coberly Isner. She also was preceded her in death by her loving husband, Ralph Edwin Nutter Sr.; her loving son, Ralph Edwin Nutter Jr.; and her only sibling, Rosemary Isner Philbrick Johnson.

She was a graduate of Davis and Elkins College, a member of Eastern Star and a longtime member of Judson Baptist Church in Belle. She worked at Charleston General Hospital, Dr. Anderson’s office, and retired from the West Virginia D.O.T. Materials and Soil Testing Division as office manager.

Surviving: her only daughter, Dianne Nutter Muncy and her husband, Tom, of Oak Hill; her grandchildren, Terra Muncy of Belle, Katherine “Kathy” Scott and her husband, Brant, of Pataskala, Ohio, Dr. Thomas L. “Todd” Muncy II, D.C., and his wife, Beth, of Bristol, Tenn., and Melissa “Missy” Triplett and her husband, David, of Columbus, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Katie Beth King and her husband, Brandon, of Great Falls, Mont., Ethan Chase and Ryan Marcus Muncy of Bristol, Tenn., and Dylann Marie Triplett of Columbus, Ohio; special friend, Angela Adkins of Belle; and her special nephew, Kendl Philbrick and his wife, Cynthia, of Williamsburg, Va.

Funeral services were Aug. 30 at Fidler and Frame Funeral Home in Belle, with the Rev. David White and Rev. David Sneed officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.

Steven Ray ‘Ziggy’ Sigler

Steven Ray “Ziggy” Sigler of West Main Street, Oak Hill, died Aug. 23, 2010, in the Bowers Hospice House following a short illness.

Born Jan. 21, 1958, in Charlton Heights, he was the son of Nellie Wood Sigler Fauber of Michigan City, Ind., and the late Elbert Ray Sigler. He also was preceded in death by sisters, Terry Jean Sigler and Sharon Evatt.

The true passion of Ziggy’s life was music; he attended Morris Harvey College studying music and he was the sole proprietor of Appalachian Recording Studio. He played with several bands touring throughout the southeast U.S.

He also enjoyed fishing and camping and spending time with his family and many, many friends.

Surviving, in addition to his mother: sister, Marsha Rakes and husband Darrell of Oak Hill; son, Anthony Justice of Portage, Mich.; two nieces, two nephews a great-niece and three great-nephews.

A celebration of Ziggy’s life was conducted Aug. 30 at the Spirit & Truth Ministries, Oak Hill, with Pastor Sam R. Calloway Jr. officiating.

Clarissa I. Taylor

Clarissa I. Taylor, 87, of Canton, Ohio, died Aug. 25, 2010, at her residence.

Born March 1, 1923, in Big Otter, she was the daughter of the late David and Sadie (Sears) Ray. She also was preceded in death by a son, “Little Jimmy;” sisters, Virgie Marie Ray and Delma Taylor; and brothers, Robert and Dolan Ray.

She was a charter member of the Ravenna Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving: her husband of 47 years, Rev. Carl J. “Jack” Taylor of Canton; son, Ron (Jeannie) Taylor of Salem, Ore.; sisters, Uneeda C. Ball of Louisville, Ohio, Delia (Jack) Gregory of Conway, S.C., and Margaret (Bill) Schumaker of Florence, S.C.; brother, O.C. (Cynara) Ray of Cheraw, S.C.; several nieces and nephews, including special nephew, Ron J. Bower of Columbus, Ohio; and a very special friend, Patty Burnham of Canton.

Funeral service was Aug. 30 at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Rev. Carl Keller officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Annita Marie Ward

Annita Marie Ward of Bridgeport died Aug. 19, 2010, after a long illness.

She was born Annita Marie Shifflet in 1948 in Charleston.

Ward was a graduate of Cedar Grove High School, West Virginia Tech, West Virginia College of Graduate Studies, and West Virginia University. She was retired from Salem University in Salem, where she worked for over 20 years.

She was a former member of the executive board of WVTESOL.

Ward was also the former president of Literacy Volunteers of Harrison County. In recent years, she taught courses online for Kaplan University and American Public University System. She was also a frequent visiting professor at ESPOL in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Recently, she began working as a writer for All People Publishing Company of Taichung, Taiwan. Additionally, she worked for many years as a scorer for Educational Testing Service’s AP, TOEFL, GRE, and PRAXIS testing programs.

Ward was fond of the novels of Lee Smith and Mark Twain, the plays of William Shakespeare, and British mystery television programs. However, she most enjoyed anything that allowed her to spend time with her children, Glen Allen Ward of Bridgeport, and Sandi Phyllis Ward of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Se is preceded in death by her father, Henry Benson Shifflet of Bridgeport, formerly of Cedar Grove. She is survived by her children, by her beloved terrier, Floyd; by her mother, Phyllis Mae Shifflet of Bridgeport; and by her sisters Sandy Dangerfield, Margaret Romine, Barbara Williamson, and her brother, David Shifflet.

As she wished, no service will be held. Her ashes are to be set aloft over southern West Virginia, a place she loved.

Golfa Adamos Worley

Golfa Adamos Worley, 86, of Pratt, died Aug. 27, 2010, after an extended illness.

Born in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Pete and Eva Adamos. She also was preceded in death by her siblings, Paul Adamos, Louie Adamos, and Julia Adamos Coble.

She was a homemaker and faithful volunteer in her church, Old Kanawha Baptist Church in Pratt, for many years. She worked with children for decades as well as singing in the choir and specials.

Surviving: her husband of 62 years, Jack L. Worley Sr.; son, Tom Worley and his wife, Judy, of Reidsville, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Karen Sue Worley of Hansford; granddaughters, Christy Kiningham and her husband, David, of Hansford, Leann Saul and her husband, Sam, of East Bank, and Carrie Valentine and her husband, Paul, of Lexington, Ky.; grandson, T.C. Worley and his wife, Bekah, of Minneapolis, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Alex Kiningham, Logan and Dalton Saul, Caleb, Clay, Aubrey and Faith Valentine and Jack and Boone Worley.

The family in fulfilling the wishes of Golfa will not have visitation and will conduct a private family memorial service.
