Herbert ‘Dick’ Winford Bailess

Herbert “Dick” Winford Bailess, 87, of Edmond, died July 8, 2010, at his home.

Born July 22, 1922, at Hurt, Va., he was the son of the late Willis Dotson and Margie Livingston Bailess.

A son, Winford Bailess; a daughter, Margaret Collins; a brother, Melvin Bailess; and sisters, Ellen McFaden and Lois Rush, also preceded him in death.

Dick was retired from the Central Appalachian Coal preparation plant at Montgomery.

He was a member of the Beauty Mountain Baptist Church and UMWA.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving: his wife, Virginia Tully Bailess; son, Henry Melvin “Hank” Bailess and wife Ann, of Edmond; daughters, Lois Holliday and husband Ted of Midlothian, Va., Frances Childress of Edmond and Donna Bailess of West Palm Beach, Fla.; brother, Norma Bailess of Winston-Salem, N.C.; sisters, Ruby Kiger of Madison Heights, Va., and Mildred Hoaglin of Denver, Colo.; and  grandchildren, Jennifer Holliday Speer, Erin Bailess, Chad Collins, Chris Collins, Ashley Childress, Olivia Bailess, Jonathan Bailess and Lydia Bailess.

Services were July 12 at Beauty Mountain Baptist Church in Edmond with Brother Leroy Pack and Joe Collins officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military graveside rites by Oak Hill VFW Post #3110.

Harold Edwin Hildebrand

Harold Edwin “Squack” Hildebrand, 87, of Dixie, died July 11, 2010, at his home.

Born Nov. 13, 1922, in Curtin, he was the son of the late Clyde Fred and Laura Belle Crew Hildebrand.

Mr. Hildebrand was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force, having served in World War II.

He retired from Elkem Metals at Alloy.

Surviving: his wife, Phala Foneda Frame Hildebrand of Dixie; son and companion, Jeffrey E. Hildebrand and Annette Richards of Chimney Corner; daughter, Rebecca Lynn Hildebrand of Dixie; grandchildren, Derek (Amanda), Matthew (Brittany), and Cody Hildebrand; and great-grandchildren, Kiersten and Baylee Hildebrand.

Funeral service was July 13 at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Minister Wayne Litton officiating. Burial was in the Craigsville Cemetery, Craigsville.

Ralph Hugh Johnson

Ralph Hugh Johnson, 87, of Richwood, died at home on July 6, 2010,  following a short illness.

Born June 27, 1923, in Grantsville, he moved to Richwood as a child where he spent all his life.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Richwood. Mr. Johnson will be remembered as a passionate coach, a dedicated teacher, a loyal public servant, and a devoted family man. 

Johnson attended Richwood High School, where he excelled in sports and where he would later teach and coach for over 30 years.  He graduated high school in 1942 and served in the Coast Guard during World War II in the campaign in the South Pacific.   

After the war, Johnson attended Glenville State College and Morris Harvey College, where he played football. He graduated from college and began teaching history and geography at Richwood High School in 1953. He was athletic director for several years, and he coached football, basketball, wrestling and track until 1972. 

In 1961, Johnson began a second career of public service; he worked a second job as a deputy sheriff while also teaching. In 1968 he was elected to the Nicholas County Commission, and in 1972, he ran for sheriff and became the first Nicholas County sheriff to succeed himself, serving two terms from 1972-1980. He also won a seat in the West Virginia State Legislature and served two terms from 1982-1986.

In addition to his public service, he also served as Nicholas County attendance director from 1980 to 1987 and worked with disadvantaged youth in the Workforce West Virginia program. In his seventies, he volunteered as a coach for the Richwood Junior High football team.

Johnson loved all sports and was a loyal fan of the Richwood Lumberjacks. An avid reader and history buff, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the Richwood Senior Citizen Center, for which he worked to improve services and facilities. 

Johnson is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Teresa Severino Johnson; brother, Lacy Hilton; and sister, Juanita Dempsey.

Surviving: his wife, Barbara Murphy Johnson; brother, Pete Hilton and wife Othella of Cottageville; sister, Barbara Thayer and husband John of Beverly; son, R. Hugh of Mt. Lookout; son, Gary and wife Susan of Richwood; son, Stephen of Johnson City, Tenn.; daughter, Marsha and husband Mike of Richwood; son, Jon and wife Donna of Eldersburg, Md.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandsons. 

Mass of Christian burial was July 10 in the RHS auditorium, followed by interment at the Mountain View Memorial Park on Hinkle Mountain in Richwood.

The family is suggesting donations be made in the memory of Ralph Johnson to the Lumberjack Athletic Club, One Valley Avenue, Richwood, WV 26261.

Glenna Jean Parcell

Glenna Jean Parcell, 65, of White Sulphur Springs, died July 1, 2010, at CAMC General Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Myrna Burgess Parcell; one child, Christy Kay Parcell; brothers, Robert and Richard Parcell; sisters, Alice Louise Parcell Mullins, Clarice Ann Parcell Cox, Nadell Hendricks, Dreama Parcell, Margaret Bush; and a brother-in-law, Dave Bush.

Glenna was a homemaker and a graduate of East Bank High School.

Surviving: her children, Lea Ann King and companion Terry Vermillion of Sylvester, David King (Sharon) of Marshall, Va., and Michael Parcell of Montgomery; her sister and best friend, Patty Cline (Jim) of Ironton, Ohio; brother, James (Nokie) Parcell, of Geneva, Ohio; and grandchildren, Michael Parcell, Brooke and Nathan King, and Kaylynn Vermillion.

At her request her body was cremated, and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
