Tech women fall to Bluefield, A-B

MONTGOMERY — The WVU Tech women led for most of the first half last Tuesday but couldn’t hold on, eventually losing a 43-41 basketball decision to visiting Bluefield (Va.) College.

Bluefield took a 19-18 lead with :05 left in the first half on a Brittney Whaley runner, then BC held on down the stretch for the two-point win. Tech had a late possession with a chance to tie the game, but the Bears missed three shots and couldn’t pull it out.

Whaley finished with 10 points to pace Bluefield (5-7).

For Tech (0-6), Jessica Johnson had a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way. Ashley Blaney pulled down 13 rebounds, and Sharnage Young and Amanda Gray had 10 caroms each.

The Golden Bears lost despite outshooting their foe, 34 percent to 23 percent, and owning a 55-45 edge on the boards.

Unfortunately, Tech also had a higher number in the turnover department (33 to 15). Bluefield scored 25 of its points off Tech miscues.

“We played to win,” said Tech coach Jim Fout. “The girls played extremely hard, but we had way too many turnovers.”

“We’ll keep working,” he added. “We’re improving, but we don’t have a true point guard and we don’t have depth.”

On Monday, Tech fell to 0-7 with a 73-48 loss to Alderson-Broaddus.

Young and Blaney netted 13 points each for the Bears, while Johnson tallied 10. Blaney also had a team-high nine rebounds, and she and Andrea Arias had three assists each.

T. Charley scored 19 points and collected 15 rebounds to pace A-B.

Tech plays in the Bluefield State College Tournament this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6.
