FRANKFORT, Ky. — WVU Tech’s season came to an end Thursday as it fell 80-55 to top-seeded Campbellsville University in the opening round of the 2010 Mid-South Conference women’s basketball tournament.
With the victory, one-loss Campbellsville became only the second team in the country to reach 30 wins on the campaign. The Tigers also ran through the MSC regular season with a perfect 14-0 mark. WVU Tech finished the season with 10 victories, five times the output from a season ago.
Campbellsville held an early 6-4 lead and then exploded, using a 19-3 run over the next nine minutes to gain a comfortable margin. Six different Tigers scored during the stretch, with only MSC Player of the Year Whitney Ballinger scoring multiple baskets. She had five of her game-high 15 points during the spurt, and when junior Courtney Danis scored with 8:08 left, the Golden Bears found themselves buried in a 25-7 hole.
Campbellsville later used an 11-4 run in the second half to put the game out of reach, thanks in part to an aggressive 1-3-1 half-court trap that kept Tech on its heels.
WVU Tech was paced by junior Shyla Jones, who finished with 11 points. Jones, who led the league with an average of 12.3 rebounds per game, was held to just six as the Tigers outrebounded Tech 35-27.
Tori Eagle, a freshman from Ripley, followed with nine points for the Golden Bears.
