Georgetown sends Tech to tourney exit
FRANKFORT, Ky. — Georgetown College’s Eddie Gray scored a team-high 23 points as the Tigers ended WVU Tech’s Mid-South Conference tournament stay with an 86-62 victory over the Golden Bear men Friday night at the Frankfort Convention Center.
Gray was a thorn in Tech’s side the entire game, connecting on seven of his 11 three-point attempts to help the Tigers, the No. 2 seed, create and extend their lead to advance to a semifinal game against the University of the Cumberlands.
Georgetown utilized a 24-5 run midway through the first half to build a comfortable, 44-19 margin. Gray led the charge with five treys.
The Bears struggled through the majority of the first half, facing a 49-30 deficit heading into intermission.
Tech opened the second half with purpose, cutting the Tiger lead to 14 points with 15 minutes left in regulation. But the Bears could get no closer despite the inspired play of guard Darryl Slack. Slack, a senior from Atlanta, poured in a game-high 28 points, connecting on 6-of-7 shots from behind the arc and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Georgetown forced Tech into 21 turnovers, while committing just 12 of its own.
The Tigers also shot 50% from the field and 42% (11-for-26) from three-point range, while Tech shot 41% from the field but made up for the difference by shooting a scorching 63% from behind the arc on 12-of-19 shooting.
Tech’s efforts were led by Slack’s 28-point, three-steal performance. Ben Shannon was the only other Tech player to reach double-digits in the loss with 10 points. Senior Zack Thomsen closed out his Golden Bear career with a six-point, four-assist performance, while senior Robby Marshall was held scoreless in the game, but added four assists, two blocks and one steal.
