Pikeville sweeps WVU Tech

Pikeville College took advantage of WVU Tech’s Saturday hospitality, but just barely.

In a weekend doubleheader at the Baisi Athletic Center, the visiting Bears swept verdicts from the home Golden Bears.

The Pikeville men rallied in the second half and outlasted Tech 88-81. Meanwhile, the Pikeville women posted a 69-64 decision over the hosts.

In the men’s contest, Tech shot just 37.1 percent (13-of-35) in the first half but still led 33-26 at the break. Pikeville outscored the Golden Bears 62-48 in the second 20-minute segment for the win.

For Tech (12-9 overall, 2-4 in the Mid-South Conference), Rickey Young and Robby Marshall each scored 20 points, and Darryl Slack added 13. Marshall grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, and Slack handed out five assists.

Others in the scoring column were: Josh Stricker, 6; Zack Thomsen, 9; Russell Allen, 1; Ben Shannon, 3; Terrale Clark, 3; Nicholas Kjaerholt, 4; and Roi Buchbinder, 1.

For Pikeville (18-2, 5-1), Jonathan Clark pumped in a game-high 24 points.

The Tech women fell to 9-12 overall and 0-5 in league play in dropping the five-point decision to the visitors.

Pikeville shot 45 percent (27-of-60) while Tech hit just 33.3 percent (20-of-60).

For Tech, Tori Eagle scored 21 points and Kerin Roche had 13. Shyla Jones supplied 11 points and 18 rebounds.

Other scorers included: Kelli Morgan, 6; Style Harper, 3; Ashley Blaney, 2; and Amber Tully, 8.

Pikeville (14-8, 2-4) got a team-best 16 points from Whitney Compton.

The Tech squads play road doubleheaders at Campbellsville Thursday and Rio Grande Saturday.
