Pioneers rip Bears 44-10


— Darold Hughes passed for 238 yards and three touchdowns as Glenville State cruised past former WVIAC member WVU Tech 44-10 Thursday.

According to www.wviac.org, Hughes connected on all three of the scoring passes in the opening half as the Pioneers built a 23-0 lead by intermission. Antwan Stewart, Jordan Griffin and Wes Hanson each hauled in a touchdown reception for GSC.

Stewart had six catches for 74 yards, while Griffin had a game-high 83 yards on four recepts.

Josh Culbertson paced Tech with 21 carries for 103 yards. The remainder of the ground game supplied a combined minus-39 yards.

Quarterback Michael Scott was 11-of-25 for 92 yards and one interception, Josh Humphrey caught two passes for 33 yards. Former West Liberty star Kashif Walls was limited to 21 yards on three receptions.

Scott scored the Tech touchdown on a 1-yard run in the third period, and Zach Christensen provided a 30-yard field goal as time wound down in the final frame.

The Golden Bears (1-1) were held to 168 yards of total offense and were guilty of four turnovers.

Brian Harden helped Glenville gain 182 yards on the ground with a team-best 61 yards on 14 carries. DeAndre Johnson rambled for 53 yards and a TD on seven attempts.

GSC’s Donald Marshall posted a huge defensive day with 16 tackles, including four sacks. He also forced three fumbles, recovering one.

The Bears visit Johnson C. Smith (N.C.) University at 2 p.m. this Saturday.
