A Boomer youngster has made solid contributions to a travel baseball all-star team in recent months.
Druw Bowen, who will be a seventh-grader at Valley High School this fall, is competing with the WV Swarm-n-Cardinals, an under-12 team that is comprised of players mainly from Kanawha and Jackson counties, with Bowen being the lone Fayette representative.
The squad plays in USSSA 12-and-under competitions through the region.
After being ranked No. 1 in the Class AA power national rankings, the Cardinals slipped to second this week. They had a total of 1,390 points, compared to 1,393 for the Dirt Bags, a squad from New Mexico. The Cardinals are 11-1 inside their class and 15-4 overall.
They have qualified to play in one of the USSSA World Series events set for July 13-18 in Florida. Depending on the players’ Little League commitments, the Cardinals may or may not play in the World Series event.
“It’s quite an honor to qualify, and to be ranked No. 1,” said Kevin Moffatt, a team spokesman.
Moffatt says Bowen has played solidly for the Cardinals.
“He is one fabulous player,” Moffatt said. “He’s got it all: power, speed and his bat is excellent.”
Like many of his Cardinal teammates, Bowen has pitched and played several other positions. “He’s very diversified.”
