Prep teams winding down

— Powered by Alexis Payne’s 31-point outburst, the Valley High girls posted a 65-39 victory over visiting Teays Valley Christian on Monday.

Abby Buchan tallied 16 points and Kelsey Bird 15 for Valley. Kylar Fragale chipped in three.

In an earlier 69-62 setback to Cross Lanes Christian, Payne bucketed an identical 31 points to power Valley. Buchan and Bird added 12 each, Fragale had three and Zae Davis scored two.

Valley (5-13) was slated to host Sherman last night, the Greyhounds’ final regular season game. Section tournament pairings have yet to be finalized.

Prior to Monday’s 78-54 win over Van, the Valley boys hadn’t played since a 47-42 victory over Richwood on Feb. 3. The ‘Hounds’ West Virginia Hometown Invitational tournament game on Saturday was postponed due to snow.

Against the Bulldogs, Eric Oden scored 17 points to lead a balanced attack for Valley (7-10), which won its third straight. Also for Valley, Keyshawn Payne and Robbie Belmont netted 15 each, and Arik McGinnis scored 10.

Also on Monday, the Riverside girls lost 76-58 to Winfield. The Warriors (6-15) got 21 points from Brittany Wood, 14 from Heather Burford and 10 from Rachel Mills.

This week, the Valley boys visit Fayetteville on Wednesday and Charleston Catholic on Friday. The ‘Hounds return home for a Feb. 20 game with Greater Beckley Christian.
