Back to School Bash — Brookside Ministries Church of God in Christ will host a backpack give-away on Saturday, July 31 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 18419 Deepwater Mountain Road, Mount Carbon, WV 25139. BAC Theater Day Camp — The Beckley Art Center will host a theater day camp for those ages 8 to 12 from Tuesday, Aug. 3 to Saturday, Aug. 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. daily. Cost per student is $75 and the students will perform on Saturday for family and friends. Students will learn theatre basics, teamwork and problem solving. The camp consists of a series of workshops. The workshops consist of ice breakers, monologue writing, prop making, theater games, improvisation, and collaborative exercise. Camp Director Kelsey Hofe works with various theater artists from the community. Hofe, an actress and teaching artist from Oak Hill, received her BFA in Theatre Performance from Marshall University in 2019 with a minor in English. Sobriety Checkpoint — The West Virginia State Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint at the intersection of Scarbro Loop Road and State Route 16 in Fayette County from 6 p.m. Friday, July 23 until 12 a.m. Saturday, July 24. The purpose of the checkpoint is to deter impaired drivers, as well as to educate the public about the dangers of driving an automobile while impaired by alcohol and/or drugs. The motoring public is urged to assist the WVSP in their efforts to stop driving under the influence incidents by reporting impaired drivers.

Waste Tire Collection — There will be a waste tire collection on Wednesday, Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the old Kmart off Route 19 in Oak Hill. Only tires from state residents will be accepted and there is a 10-tire limit per person. Have your West Virginia ID ready when you sign in. Tires must be off the rim. Entries Accepted — The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History (WVDACH) has issued a call for entries for its 22nd biennial West Virginia Juried Exhibition. The show will be on display at the Culture Center in Charleston. Submissions for the exhibit in the form of digital images on CD or USB flash drive will be accepted through Monday, Aug. 2. Artists may submit two pieces for the exhibition with a limit of three digital images per entry. Entry forms and properly identified images must be accompanied by a non-refundable fee of $20 per piece. Make check payable to West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History. Digital images can be mailed to WVDACH, West Virginia Juried Exhibition (WVJE) 2021, The Culture Center, 1900 Kanawha Blvd., E., Charleston, W.Va. 25305-0300, or hand-delivered to the Culture Center at the State Capitol Complex. An option to email images will be available this year by first contacting Cailin Howe, exhibits coordinator, to ensure your images are submitted properly. Image file sizes must be small enough to be received through email, an entry form must be included, and entry fee will still need to be mailed to the department. Eligible entries include works created in the past two years in the areas of painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography, digital art, mixed media and crafts. Entrants must be over the age of 18 and must be residents of or maintain a permanent residence in West Virginia. Entrants also must complete a WVDACH Artists’ Register form at http://www.wvculture.org/museum/artsreg.html and submit six slides or digital images representative of current work for the file at the department. The images submitted for the Artists’ Register are not used in jurying entries into the exhibition. A prospectus for the exhibit is available online at http://www.wvculture.org/museum/juried/2021/juriedexperspectous2021.pdf. The exhibit will open at the Culture Center with an awards ceremony and reception at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14 and remain on display through Feb. 14, 2022. The exhibit showcases the work of state artists and craftspeople and provides the public with a comprehensive view of art and craft activities in the state. Preserve WV Positions Available — Preserve WV, the AmeriCorps program of the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia, is now accepting applications for the 2021-2022 program year. A statewide national service initiative, Preserve WV and its members aim to help main streets thrive, help communities capture their local history, and preserve beloved West Virginia landmarks. While serving with AmeriCorps, members make a year-long commitment to bettering West Virginia’s communities all the while gaining meaningful, hands-on experience in the fields of history, historic preservation, and community development. AmeriCorps members receive a living stipend and, upon successful completion of their service term, an education award that can be used to pay off current student loans or toward future schooling. Individuals with experience and interest in historical research, archival work, communications, and community organizing are encouraged to apply. Depending on their own unique skills and preferences, a successful candidate will be placed at one of Preserve WV’s partner sites in West Virginia. Sites currently seeking an AmeriCorps member in the Fayette County include New River Gorge National Park and Preserve and Harmony for Hope Inc. Morrisey Mobile Office Visits — Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announced a representative from his office will meet with central and southeastern West Virginia residents in July to discuss consumer-related issues and answer any potential questions. Justin Arvon, a consumer outreach and compliance specialist with the office, will host the events locally as scheduled: July 26 from noon to 1 p.m. – Mount Hope Public Library, 500 Main St., Mount Hope; and July 29 from 11 a.m. to noon – Chick-fil-A Crossroads Mall, 31 Crossroads Mall, Mount Hope. Bookmobile Available for Site Visits — The Fayette County Public Library is looking for businesses or groups that would be interested in having a visit from the Bookmobile. The Bookmobile can visit weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or whatever suits your group’s needs. The Bookmobile has a wide variety of items and if you need something in particular or an author you like officials can arrange for it to be onboard. Kids Health & Safety Fair — The annual Let’s Get Moving Kids Health & Safety Fair hosted by Montgomery Pediatrics will be held Friday, Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the MGH campus. The fair provides free activities, games and educational opportunities for local children, including photo booth, fitted bicycle helmets, a kids’ zone with games and reading, health screenings, sports and fitness activities and more. Living History Programs and Craft Demonstrations – Monongahela National Forest staff and volunteers invite visitors to take a step back in time at a Pioneer Visit interpretive program. The programs will take place at the Sites Homestead near the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center each Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. through Labor Day. Experience life in the early 1800s with special programs featuring folk crafts, mountain music, and costumed interpreters. Pioneer Visit programs will take place rain or shine. The restored Sites Homestead is open to visitors each week Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Homestead will be open to visitors Friday through Sunday on Labor Day weekend. Music on Main — Harmony for Hope will host Music on Main every Sunday morning from 8 to 10 a.m. through Sunday, Sept. 12. Join Harmony for Hope each Sunday morning on Main Street in Mount Hope for inspirational music, coffee and community. Get updated on what’s going on in the area, share stories about what you’re doing and enjoy the company of neighbors and a cup of coffee on your way to your Sunday morning place of worship. This is an outdoor event and the group looks forward to seeing old friends and new throughout the 2021 Music on Main season.

Lilly Reunion Resumes in 2021 — If your ancestors lived in southern West Virginia or the extended surrounding area, you are probably related to many of the participants and attendees at the Lilly Family Reunion. Everyone is welcome. Plan to attend, reunite and meet your cousins, enjoy free entertainment, eat delicious food, let your children play on inflatables, search your ancestry, and just have a great time visiting. The reunion features complimentary entry, parking, entertainment, children’s playgrounds and games and ancestry search.
