Meetings

Board of Health — The Fayette County Board of Health will meet Tuesday, May 28 at 4 p.m. at the FCHD, 202 Church Street, Fayetteville. All interested persons are invited to attend.

Montgomery City Council — The Montgomery City Council has changed the time of its regular council meetings to 7 p.m. Meetings still will be held on the second Tuesday of each month.

Board of Education — The Fayette County Board of Education will meet as follows: regular meeting — Tuesday, May 28, 6 p.m., BOE office.

Fayette County Commission — The Fayette County Commission meets at 9 a.m. in the county commission room in the Fayette County Courthouse, Fayetteville. Meetings scheduled throughout the year are: May 24, June 7, June 21, July 12, July 26, Aug. 9, Aug. 23, Sept. 11, Sept. 27, Oct. 11, Oct. 25, Nov. 8, Nov. 22, Dec. 6 and Dec. 20.

KFPSD — The regular board meeting of the Kanawha Falls Public Service District is the second Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. at the office in Gauley Bridge. The public is invited to attend.

Montgomery Historical Committee — The Montgomery Historical Committee meets the second Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. at Upper Kanawha Valley Technology Community Building, 326 Third Avenue, Montgomery. The public is invited to attend.

Montgomery Area Lions Club — The Montgomery Area Lions Club meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Upper Kanawha Valley Technology Community Building, 326 Third Avenue, Montgomery, beginning at 6 p.m. Prior to the meeting, members are invited to gather at Gino’s at 5:15 p.m. for dinner. New members are always welcome.

Kanawha Valley Coin Club — The Kanawha Valley Coin Club meets the first Tuesday of each month at the South Charleston Library, 312 4th Avenue, South Charleston, at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend the meetings. New River Humane Society — The New River Humane Society meeting will be held at Los Vaqueros on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Gauley River PSD — The Gauley River Public Service District meets the second Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. in the office at 29 S. Swiss Road, Swiss.

Morris Creek Watershed Association — The Morris Creek Watershed Association’s monthly meeting is the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the watershed office located at 328 Morris Drive, Montgomery.

Fayette Association of Retired School Employees — The Fayette Association of Retired School Employees (FARSE) regularly meets the fourth Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the conference room in the Quality Inn Whitewater Bar and Grille, Fayetteville (changes of meeting dates are made when the date interferes with a holiday weekend). VA in Need of Volunteer Drivers — The West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance is looking for individuals to volunteer one day a month to transport veterans to medical appointments for the Veteran Transportation Network. This program is designed to ensure that veterans without transportation have access to the health care they need. It is free to the veterans. Anyone wishing to volunteer to become a driver of veterans should contact the Voluntary Service Office at the Beckley VA Medical Center: 304-255-2121 ext. 4162 or 4556.

Energy Express — Applications for Energy Express at Pratt Elementary School are available for the summer program. Any child who was in kindergarten through fifth grade this year is eligible to attend. Energy Express starts on June 7 and runs through July 27 at Pratt. The reading and play program designed to prevent a “summer slide,” or loss of reading skills over the summer, is a great way for children to experience art, music, games and drama that help them with their reading, enjoy a monitored time of play, receive free books and get breakfast and lunch each day. Harm Reduction & Recovery Program — The Fayette County Health Department hosts a harm reduction and recovery program every Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at 202 Church Street, Fayetteville. Many services are offered, including STD testing, needle exchange and supplies, immunizations, wound assessment and treatment, Naloxone training, etc. If you would like to volunteer, please call 304-574-1617.

Food Pantry — The North Fayette Food Pantry is operating a food pantry on the third Wednesday of each month for two hours, from 10 a.m. to noon, providing free USDA commodities to those who qualify, located at 5407 Midland Trail, Falls View, in accordance with federal and USDA policy. This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

East Bank High School Alumni Association — The East Bank High School Alumni Association annually presents the Dana and Ethel Ervin Scholarships to deserving graduates of Riverside High School. Places to Go/Things to Do

Bucket Brigade — Join the Ernie Nester Chapter of Trout Unlimited on Saturday, June 8 for its annual Bucket Brigade, the hand placement of limestone sands into the headwaters of the Middle Fork of the Williams River in the Monongahela National Forest. Everyone is welcome. Meet in the parking lot of the Cranberry Mountain Visitor’s Center (Nature Center) at 9 a.m. The Nature Center is located on Rt. 39 at the junction with the Highland Scenic Highway. The work site is located nearby on the Highland Scenic Highway. If you anticipate arriving after 9 a.m., please drive out the Scenic Highway until you locate the work crew. Expect to get wet and dirty; please wear appropriate shoes and clothing and bring work gloves. Please be careful at all times and do not exceed your normal capabilities. The buckets with limestone sands may contain up to 25 pounds of sand. Always watch out for traffic when you are near the Highland Scenic Highway. Drinks, a mid-morning snack, and lunch will be provided. Chair Yoga — There will be a chair yoga class each Monday and Thursday morning at 8:45 a.m. at the Upper Kanawha Valley YMCA in Montgomery. The class is free for YMCA members.

Gauley Bridge Walking Group — People of all ages, abilities, and residences are welcome to join Community Captain Darla Keenan for a free walking group each weekday morning at 6 a.m. at the Ruby Winebrenner Community Center (former Gauley Bridge High School). UKV Walking Group — Join the UKV Walking Group every Monday at 5:30 p.m. and Thursday at 10 a.m. at the YMCA in Montgomery to walk a mile with the group. Community captains Jo Harris and Joyce Surbaugh will lead this weekly walking group to help provide a free opportunity in their community to be active. This is a beginner-friendly weekly walking group sponsored by Active Southern West Virginia that everyone is welcome to join. Fundraisers

Yard Sale — The GFWC Woman’s Club of Montgomery will hold a yard sale at the Montgomery Community Center (the former WVU Tech David S. Long Alumni Center), 610 Third Avenue, Montgomery, on Saturday, June 1 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a wide range of items. Proceeds are used for community projects.

Schools

Riverside Girls Softball — The Riverside High School girls softball summer practice schedule is as follows: June 3 to June 7, 6 to 8 p.m.; June 10 to June 14 (softball camp), 6 to 8 p.m. for those ages 10 to 18; June 16, game (opponent, time TBA); and June 17 to June 21, 6 to 8 p.m. All athletes must have a physical dated after May 1 and are to bring a copy to the first day of practice. Athletes will be unable to practice without a copy of the physical exam on file.

Riverside High Wrestling — Summer conditioning for Riverside High School wrestling will be held June 3 to June 20, Monday through Thursday, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Providential Event XI — The God Factor Ministries, Inc. will host Providential Event XI, Genuine Unity in the Body of Christ, on May 31 at 7 p.m., June 1 at 12 noon and June 2 at 3 p.m. at the Tri-State Worship Center located at 901 Solida Road, South Point, Ohio. Tent Revival — The 6th annual On the Mountain Tent Revival will be held July 15 to July 19 at Hawks Nest State Park at 6:30 p.m. each evening. There will be special singing nightly.
