Ryan Duncan was named the 2019 winner of the Leon Newman Memorial Award at Valley Elementary School. Principal Alan Dyer presented Ryan with a certificate and a Kindle Fire and his name will be inscribed on the plaque listing award winners inside the VES entrance.

Ryan Duncan, a fifth grade student at Valley Elementary, was named the 2019 recipient of the Leon Newman Memorial Award at the end of the spring semester.

The annual award is given in memory and honor of Leon Newman, a former member of the Fayette County Board of Education, representing the Valley district. The award recipient, a fifth grader chosen by a panel of experienced Valley Elementary teachers and staff members, reflects Mr. Newman’s many outstanding characteristics.

The student must have attended Valley Elementary since kindergarten and the criteria used to determine the winner are friendliness, respect for others, a true concern for academics and learning, a caring heart, and overall good citizenship.

At the school-ending awards assembly, Duncan was presented with a Kindle Fire. Also, a nameplate bearing his name and date, will be added to the Leon Newman Memorial plaque, which is prominently displayed in the entrance hallway at Valley Elementary School in Smithers.
