SOUTH CHARLESTON — To further its mission of promoting student success, preparing a skilled workforce and building tomorrow’s leaders through access to quality education, BridgeValley Community and Technical College will feature artist, advocate and entrepreneur Crystal Good as the keynote speaker at its 2019 commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11.
An Irene McKinney Scholar and author of “Valley Girl,” Good is the founder and CEO of Mixxed Media, a government relations consulting firm leveraging social and media engagement strategies for mission-driven organizations, and Sassafrass, a “word art inspired” collaborative jewelry line.
Her advocacy bridges cultural, environmental and economic development in Appalachia and she is passionate about literacy, including digital and political literacy through her self-made performance art position of “Social Media Senator for the Digital District of West Virginia.”
She is a member of the Affrilachian (African American Appalachian) Poets, a group of writers and artists whose creations and existence combat the erasure of African American identity in the Appalachian region.
Good, a mother of three, has performed internationally across the United States and presented on “West Virginia and Quantum Physics” at the 2013 TEDx conference in Lewisburg and “Quantum Politics” at the 2019 TEDx in Corbin, Kentucky. Good holds a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia State University and master’s degree from West Virginia Wesleyan.
BridgeValley’s commencement is at 11 a.m. at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center, 200 Civic Center Drive in Charleston. Approximately 225 students are expected to participate in the ceremony to receive their certificates and associate degrees.
