A 4-year-old girl was struck and killed by a vehicle on W.Va. 61 in the Montgomery Heights area of Fayette County late last Monday evening, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.
The victim was identified as Gracie L. Naylor of Montgomery Heights.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that this child apparently ran into the traffic lane of the roadway and was struck by the oncoming vehicle,” Sheriff Steve Kessler reported. “There is no indication that drug or alcohol abuse was a factor in this collision and preliminarily, it does not appear the vehicle was being operated in a reckless manner.”
The driver of the vehicle and the mother of the child were both transported to Montgomery General Hospital due to emotional trauma.
The driver was later transferred to Charleston Area Medical Center, but her condition is unknown at this time.
The identity of the driver is not being released at this time and no charges have been filed and police say they do not anticipate that any will be.
“This appears to have been just a tragic accident,” Kessler said.
Jan-Care Ambulance, Montgomery Fire Department and Fayette County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene. The West Virginia State Police assisted the investigation with an accident reconstruction.
The incident remains under investigation by Sgt. T.N. Mooney and Detective Cpl. R.K. Perdue of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by Cpl. C.B. Payne, an accident reconstructionist from the West Virginia State Police.
