With the COVID-19 health crisis still affecting so many on a worldwide level, Montgomery city officials remind those who plan to seek office later this year to keep an important deadline in mind.
The 2020 Montgomery municipal election is scheduled for June 9, and the final day for candidates to seek office is Saturday, April 4, according to office manager Angie Tackett.
Since city hall is currently closed to the public, and the city is in the process of moving to its new city hall offices, Tackett says the best way to file is to email her at firstname.lastname@example.org. She can mail or email forms back to candidates so they can be submitted in time to meet the deadline.
Candidates may also call 304-442-5181 during regular city hall hours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, but the phone lines may or may not be available due to the move in locations. Some of the change-over work for the city hall has been done, but moving will be finalized on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28. Officials expect to begin operations at the new site on Monday, March 30, although the office will still be closed to the public.
Candidates who wait until April 4 to file must call Tackett or recorder David White to make an appointment, and they must have the form notarized in advance. To avoid problems, Tackett recommends not waiting until the last day. "If they get it done (by April 3), they don't have to worry," she said.
Further information, including additional contact numbers, will be placed on the door of the new city hall, which is located at 321 Fourth Avenue. Updated details will also be posted on the city's Facebook page Montgomery WV.
