A Nicholas County man was arrested after Fayette County deputies were alerted to a burglary during the early hours on Sunday.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a call in the Dixie area of the county where they discovered a burglar, John David Backus, 33, of Mount Nebo, being held at gunpoint by a homeowner.
Backus had allegedly broken into the home around 3 a.m. Saturday before the residents were able to run to a neighbor’s for assistance.
According to the sheriff’s department, when deputies took Backus into custody, he bit one deputy while punching another.
Backus has been charged with nighttime burglary, two counts of battery on a police officer, destruction of property and simple possession of narcotics.
The sheriff’s department was assisted by officers with the Smithers Police Department and the Nicholas County Sheriff’s Department.
