PRATT — Debbie Samples feels it is imperative that we honor and cherish our senior citizens.
Samples, who was recently chosen as the 2014 Pratt Citizen of the Year, rode in the parade in this past weekend's Pratt Fall Festival.
With help from some of those senior citizens themselves, Samples helps feed the Senior Lunch Bunch each week at Pratt Town Hall, as well as seeing that shut-ins in town have a hot meal, too. They help recognize the senior citizens' birthdays, as well.
"I try to give back to them what they did for me when I was sick (she suffered a recent bout with lung cancer)," said Samples, who lived in Pratt for about a decade before moving away, then returning about 1 1/2 years ago.
Samples is joined by folks like Ms. Sheets, who takes food to shut-ins using her own vehicle, and Ms. Lowe, who washes dishes and helps clean up after the meals.
The effort is run on community donations and some funds from a grant.
Samples says it is important to take care of the town's senior citizens.
"I've learned a lot from them," she said. "They bring so much joy.
"I fell in love with all of them. They've given (so much) to the community. I would like to see more people come out and work with the seniors."
