Smithers

The UKV Creative Arts Group and the town of Smithers have raised funds to purchase school supplies for area students from Pre-K to 12th grade in all public schools in the area. Supplies will be offered to area students on Aug. 11 for Kanawha County students and Aug. 16 for Fayette County students.

A recent fundraising drive will result in supplies for students in the Upper Kanawha Valley area as they prepare to embark on the 2019-20 school term.

According to Smithers Mayor Anne Cavalier, the UKV Creative Arts Group and the town of Smithers have raised funds to purchase school supplies for area students from Pre-K to 12th grade in all public schools in the area.

Smithers and the UKV Creative Arts Group "care about the families in our area and we want students to start the year off prepared," said Cavalier.

Donations of cash and supplies (still incoming) from a variety of businesses and individuals have so far resulted in 115 book bags filled by volunteers and donors, said Cavalier. Volunteers went shopping at the Quincy Walmart Friday to purchase supplies to fill out the book bags. The Quincy Walmart offered a 10 percent discount on the purchases, said Cavalier.

Supplies will be distributed on two different dates:

• Sunday, Aug. 11 — 2 to 5 p.m. at the former Valley Elementary School (soon to be the Smithers Gateway Center); and

• Friday, Aug. 16 — 6 to 9 p.m. from the "Magic Carpet" at the Smithers Plein Air Art activities.

The distribution dates will help students both in Fayette and Kanawha counties, with the first date geared toward Kanawha students since they start school first, and the second aimed at Fayette students.

Once volunteers run out of supplies at each location, that donation date will conclude.
