Rising Valley High School junior Abby Buchan has continued to excel in track and field competitions over the summer.

On a recent weekend, Buchan — also a basketball standout for the Greyhounds — participated in the USA Track and Field Region 5 Junior Olympics competition in Michigan as a member of the Capital City Striders.

In the 15-16-year-old division, Buchan won the javelin, in addition to placing third in the high jump (a best clearance of 4 feet, 11 inches) and being a member of a third-place 4x100-meter relay team (51.2 seconds).

Those efforts qualified her for the national meet to be held in Greensboro, NC during the last weekend in July.

“She ought to be one of the top throwers for the javelin, which is strange,” said Marshall Murray, who has coached Buchan for the past two years at VHS.

The javelin isn’t in the competitive cycle for athletes in WVSSAC-sponsored meets, so Buchan is still early in the learning process for that discipline.

“She actually messed up (at the Reg. 5 meet),” Murray said. “They put them on grass instead of (a synthetic) runway.”
