An exciting girls matchup between No. 4 seed Fayetteville PK-8 and No. 5 Valley PK-8 highlighted the first night of the 2022 Fayette County Middle School Basketball Tournament.

In the evening’s first game, Fayetteville fell behind early and was in arrears 28-22 through three periods before rallying to secure the triumph.

After finding themselves trailing, the Pirates took a 29-28 lead on a Braylee Hunt 3-pointer from the left corner with about 5:00 left. Later, Valley regained the lead with free throws from Raelyn Morris and Hadassah Hamm, and the Greyhounds clung to a 38-34 lead with 2:00 left.

Fayetteville rallied late, though, and Chrissa Carter converted a crucial steal into a 1-of-2 effort at the foul line with 18 seconds remaining to give the Pirates their final cushion of 39-38.

For the Pirates, Mia Calloway poured in 20 points to pace the attack. Also providing offense were: Ava Emery, 6; Ava Pomeroy, 4; Hunt, 7; and Carter, 2.

Hamm scored 14 points and Morris tossed in 13 to lead Valley. Other scorers were: Kiauna Banks, 8; Jacie Wiseman, 2; and Hayleigh Newman, 2.

In the other two games of the night, the No. 4 seed Valley boys dispatched No. 5 seed Meadow Bridge 51-11, and the No. 2 Midland Trail girls handled the No. 3 Meadow Bridge girls 26-15.

For the Greyhound boys against the Wildcats, Brayden Arthur led the way with 10 points. Also in the scoring column for Valley were: Logan Backus, 9; Isaiah Turner, 8; Mark Persinger, 4; Logan Nelson, 2; Tavion Woods, 6; John Neal, 4; Caden Morris, 2; and Quincy Jenkins, 4.

Supplying offense for Meadow Bridge were: Trip Roles, 4; Trent Roles, 2; Weslee Kinder, 3; and Tony Martin, 2.

In the final game of the evening, the Trail girls pulled away in the fourth quarter to earn the triumph.

Providing offense for the Patriots were: Nevaeh Hall, 4; Haven Gerwig, 6; Whitney Bibb, 3; Rachel Pritt, 5; Saelyr Wilson, 4; and Raygen Parsons, 4.

Point-producers for Meadow Bridge were: Keira Hanshew, 5; Lilyan Hayes, 6; Laycee Conway, 2; and Meredith Fleshman, 2.

Game 1 — Girls consolation, 4:30 p.m.

Game 2 — Boys consolation, 6 p.m.

Game 3 — Girls championship, 7:30 p.m.

Game 4 — Boys championship, 9 p.m.

Admission will be $5.
