Mountain State University withstood a late charge to pull out a 91-86 win last Tuesday over West Virginia University Tech.

NAIA No. 5 MSU (13-2) led by 10 points, 84-74, with just over two minutes left to play. Tech rallied to cut the deficit to two points down the stretch.

Nicholas Kjaerholt hit a 3-pointer for the Golden Bears at the 1:51 mark. Doug Wiggins answered for the Cougars, but Kjaerholt scored again and completed a 3-point play to make it 86-80.

Following a turnover, Tech got another 3-pointer, by Joseph Morgan. Winston Robinson hit a layup for MSU, but Josh Proctor nailed a trey with 18 seconds to go that made it 88-86.

MSU’s Wiggins was fouled five seconds later and he hit the second of two foul shots.

The Golden Bears didn’t score again. Jamar Board scored a transition bucket just before the final buzzer for the Cougars to push the lead back to five.

MSU led 40-37 at halftime.

The Cougars’ balanced scoring was led by Board with 15 points, Tay Spann with 13, Wiggins with 12, David Nyarsuk with 11 and Robinson and Cam Miller with 10 apiece.

Nyarsuk and Ryan Washington each had nine rebounds and both Wiggins and Mark Williams had four assists.

Tech (6-7) was paced by Terrale Clark with 16 points. Kjaerholt and Donald Robinson had 15 apiece while Tabb had 14 and Arnold 10.

Proctor had 11 rebounds and Clark had nine. Tabb handed out seven assists.

Later in the week, Tech dropped Mid-South Conference decisions to UVA-Wise (83-80) and Pikeville College (90-85). In the first game, Proctor collected 28 points and 17 rebounds for the Bears. Against Pikeville, he had 27 points and 12 boards.

Tech (6-9) hosts Shawnee State at 8 p.m. on Thursday and Georgetown at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
