MONTGOMERY — The inaugural UKV YMCA Holiday Tournament, featuring local boys and girls high school basketball squads, will be contested on Dec. 28-29.
“We are excited to host the holiday tournament and give the high school students an opportunity to play on our court,” said Jessica Wagner, the YMCA’s aquatics director.
Admission will be $5, and concessions will be available.
Schools participating in the girls division will be Valley, Sherman, Independence and Riverside. Sherman and Independence will square off on the first day, as will Valley and Riverside.
For the boys, the field will include Valley, Van, Poca and Riverside. First-day matchups will be Van-Poca and Valley-Riverside.
Action will commence at 2:30 p.m. on both days.

Upper Kanawha Valley YMCA notes:
• Registration for both January lifeguard courses and new registrations for swimming lessons and karate will be taken in early December. The January lifeguard course is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 10 to Sunday, Jan. 13, and costs $191. Anyone wishing to take the course must first pass a pre-skill swimming exam and be 15 years of age; the dates for the pre-skill exams will be announced soon.
• Swimming lesson sign-up info for Session 1: $25 for members, $35 for non-members. Classes are 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. on Tuesday or Thursday, and they run for seven weeks. Karate runs twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday) at 6 p.m. (youth class) and 7:30 p.m. (adult class). Cost will be $50 per session for members, $70 per session for non-members and $100 per session for families.
